Well 1 of the 5 new nas snails didn't make it ( one was struggling from the start upside down on sandbed with inside hanging out so prezume this one but unsure) but 1 hermit got brand new shell and 3 other hermits all dived in each others shells lol

The new biggest friendliest hermit ( after other got sumped) spotted trouchus snail on glass but close to samdbed and never seen a hermit run so fast ha ha.
Well hung onto the snail for good 15 minutes eating the new what I prezume is red wiry turf algae from snail shell, snail couldnt shake him off so intervened after ovbiously taking few videos as you do,snail got at least 16 inch up the glass and hermit got such a strong grip on it

Are you sure snail was dead and not killed? Looks like the hermit wanted the shell and is removing the snail with some life left... But, my eyes could be wrong.

Not sure how snail actually died.seen it upside down on sandbed for hours before just laying there with no hermits around it ,then all of sudden seen one hermit turning it over and then started videoing as thought would catch it actually switch shells as didnt think no snail in it but didn't see no life in snail or any struggle at all from the snail but unsure ,maybe snail was in bad state for it to be upside down on sand bed and hermit finished it off.but never a dull momemt in my tank that's for sure ^_^

It could have been dying for sure. The algae will need to be scrubbed off. Looks like turf on the snail shells. Or leave them exposed to air for about 5 minutes and some scrubbing.

If you have algae eaters, i'd let it be.

Ok will decide tonight of pull them out and scrub shells or not if can find them all that is.they only small and lots of passage ways I made through the rocks when glued together.
Would been best to scrub off before added them as been in couple days now so had chance for spores to get released or snapped off,if it is what I think it is and red wiry turf algae it grows quite slow I read in that article and at least one hermit loves it and got a few of that variation of hermit so we shall see how it works out.

At moment I researching lights, mrs doesn't want any lights hung from ceiling and doesnt want open topped so limits me a bit but firstly need find out if can add 54 watt t5's as at momemt I got mixture of 39 watt marine blue and sunlight t5's what came with tank and I like the flouresent look of the corals and if turn reflectors to ceiling my drap pale looking orange zoas really shine so need see if can add higher wattage t5 bulbs without changing ballast and if running all blue tubes be good for the corals and which mixture to get what the corals need and get the look I like so research time to refresh memory on lights needed and eventually some kind of led fixture that will sit on the glass panels or just above them but still under the hood along with my t5's

Oh boy, there are so many opinions when it comes to t5 mixing.
Do you have 4 bulbs or 6 bulbs?
Only 4 bulbs .
2 marine blue 39w
2 sunlight 39w both aqua one stock tubes.
From looking online I think they are 39w anyway.cant see it written anywhere on tube but not had thorough look tbh.
But as it quite a deep tank 25 inch from bottom glass to top water surface then extra 4 inch to top of actually hood so makes hard to reach to sandbed ( wouldnt get such a deep tank next time )
Just under 4 inch available room each side of t5 fixture from front tank - fixture then at rear of tank so was thinking a long thin led fixture ,the ones with extendable parts to hook over edge of tank but just sit it on top of the glass bracing at top of tank above glass.but me and Mrs want that extra pop that get from the blue lights as what attracted us to reef tanks in first place .
Don't mind the green torch it in middle of pooing so shrivelled up,but once zoa garden grows in will look much better with bluer lights in my opinion so will get there eventually .Will have to see how the nuclear green paly plays with others there and move if needed

This style light .as removing hood and attaching light to edge of tank or hanging from ceiling mrs doesn't want so kind of limits me to something that stays under hood so really unsure which way to go with lights but first thing would be get more blue lights and then may encourage mrs to change her mind on few things ha ha but idk

This is an example picture. Your ballast should tell you what it can run.
ballast.jpg
Ummm ok,I will have to see if can get my fixture open to look at the ballast.it looks like some end caps will come off which hold long bit plastic on and I hope it takes bigger kW tubes as image you shown says 2 x 28 or 4 x 14 so hopefully mine doesn't say 4 x 39 w as if does then can't add higher kW tubes but we shall see and thanks

I am very tired of filter socks :( I am done with them for now. But, i wonder if I should add them back?
Your choice but depends on reason why you stopped using them I guess as if start using them you going have same problem or if irritates you changing them out every few days then still will irritate you unless you learnt for it to not bother you idk

changing them out every 3 days. It gets tiresome. Having to hand wash them, blagh. I didn't really see a benefit to having them either. The sump has a lot of pods to eat up food that makes it down there. Fish waste turns into "mud" eventually. which is what is used to produce a proper macro algae environment.

I would have to pull up what one of the chemistry guys said. It made plenty of sense why the socks are not needed.

I seen some posts on r2r saying all the crud that builds up ends up being inert and causes no difference to water chemistry like extra p04 or n03 etc so can just leave it in and yeah can imagine be irritating and a chore changing every 3 days then washing and drying .one reason why saved that video above is guy says ends up being 16 cents pet filter sock he makes so doesnt wash them just makes some which lasts 2 months and changes 2 x a week and throws them away then makes more when needed .
I've got sponges where pipework enters sumo but this mainly for stopping splashing and get less salt creep as keep one sponge under water and 1 sponge out water an inch or so and pipe just under water a little .
But since put crab in sump, the sump never been so clean lol but also see small copepods and mysis shrimp down there at night sometimes and eventually want a fuge going on or even some fast growing coral like xenia I looked up a bit ago and have on reverse light cycle to dt so helps with ph drop also but undecided yet.
I've got a young tank and feed 3 times daily and last 2 wc been nearly 20% with 50 litres new water and total system volume after displacements from rocks about 310-320 so 30 litres = 10% so 50 litres about 17% mainly but reading on salifert and api test kits still reading 40- 50 ppm nitrate so if do 10 or 20% it still reads same after wc lol so some kind fuge would benifit I believe

It's really nice to have a fuge going. Too bad my sump isn't easy to decorate. It has too many baffles. Makes no sense why there are so many chambers. I wanted to remove a few and my husband said no.

Yeah my sump got 7 chambers/ sections in and out and under and over and under and over etc ha ha

For me to have a fuge would need to put in largish chamber where currently have skimmer and have skimmer as hand on side tank skimmer which it's also designed to be and even though if overflow it goes back down neck of skimmer as it lower but lots gunk going back where it came from ,I'm guessing would make skimmer go nuts and possibly overflow out of skimmer Cup into sump so this concerns me ,but saying that a few times my skimmer overflowed back down neck of skimmer and didn't overflow over cup of skimmer so maybe it be OK but idk.
Skimmer has a drain outlet at bottom of cup and airline tubing I could put in a 3 litre bottle but if skimmer starts skimming wetter for some reason and goes into 3 litre bottle then this also worries me as then ato come on possibly dropping salinity .
Other than in skimmer chamber I could have macro algae in a basket in return pump chamber but not ideal .

Not sure if got start of a problem or not.
Only seen I at night over last week bit now can see through day sometimes just before lights out .when lobo not so fluffy ao like part skeloton sticking out .
If watch video disregard last few minutes when goes off the white part as just looking around is All.
On about the white part on outside flesh of lobo like in picture .
Also don't know if the white on inside is problem or just part of normal lobo .was like this when bought it.
