Hello reefing community! I want to document and share with you my 48 gallon saltwater reef system. I’m not a pro by any standards. I’m just your average guy doing his best to keep a piece of the reef in my living room. This (as you all know) is a challenge even for seasoned reefers. So, in the hopes of learning how to keep my fish alive, grow stunning coral, and keep water in the tank and not the floor, I’m going to make my reef aquarium public.

System specs

Biological Filtration
49lbs of Assorted Dry Rock:
About 15lbs Of Pukani
15lbs of Marcorock
a few pieces of shelf-rock
and 1 piece of coral skeleton (my fave).
80lbs of CaribSea Arag-Alive Special Grade Sand.

Chemical Filtration
N/A

Note: not sure if the items in the filtration list is in the right category. Would appreciate some help here.

Plumbing
Bean Animal Overflow
MODULAR MARINE'S 800 gph LOW PROFILE OVERFLOW BOX
3/4 return with ball valve and manifold with three 3/4 gate valve.
1/2 main drain with gate valve.
1/2 secondary drain with gate valve.
1/2 Emergency drain.

Note: 1/2 drains was not my idea. The tank was already drilled in the left corner. I did not want to cover holes with bulk heads and drill new holes and buy a new overflow box. I spoke to a few knowledgeable people and said it would be fine.

RO/DI

Bulk Reef Supply 6 STAGE DELUXE PLUS RO/DI SYSTEM

I purchased this system as a package deal on craigslist for 1,000 bucks. Everything but the heater and live sand was included for this price. Retail for this setup was in the ballpark of $2,800. So, not to bad of a deal.

Please post any questions, comments, or concerns. I would love to hear what you think and learn from your input.

Next post will be DAY 1: How I cured and cycled my rock.

That's a good looking set up. Signing up to follow along. I ended up acid washing my dead live rock, then curing in saltwater for a few months prior to use.
