6 Foot Peninsula Tank Flow Suggestions

Folks,

I tried searching but kept getting an error message. My apologies if this question has been asked and answered and I missed it...

I have a 6' 220g Peninsula Tank and am looking for advice on flow. I have 2 MP60s I had planned to use on the far side, and I am trying to figure out what to put on the return/overflow side of the tank. Should I go with two more MP 60's or two Gyre pumps? The tank will be SPS dominant.

IMO, a gyre pump. So much flow, like a sheet of water.

I have a 7' peninsula. I have a gyre on the open end and powerheads (MP60 and 2 Octo Pulse 4) on the over flow side. The idea is to use the powerheads to create turbulent flow in the bottom and middle of the tank sending the flow to the far end and the gyre to send a sheet of surface water to the overflow.

I also do this but run into issues with the overflow having troubles staying consistent, this happen to you?

No. I don't have any overflow problems. The gyre is not strong enough, especially with all of the other turbulent flow in the tank, to create a wave so the water level at the overflow box is pretty stable. I also keep the water level pretty high in the overflow box, just touching the top of the emergency pipe which is maybe a half inch below the level of the overflow. (I promised the wife a quiet tank and have done everything I can to make it happen!)

Appreciate all the advice! What brand of gyre pump is suggested? Do I need One or two on the far end?

Probably 1 will do it.
What's the budget?
Jeboa are cheap and don't have all the bells and whistles and maxspect is top of the line but you will pay for what they can do.

Thanks. I usually cheap out and then regret it. This time around, I'd rather spend more up front. :)

I have used Jaboe, Maxspect and Icecap gyres and they all work well (you do have to clean them regularly). I have started using the cloud Maxspect as they have nice deflectors and they have been going on sale a lot lately. For the price Gyres are hard to beat if you are willing to clean them. I actually have 2 sets and just swap them out to make it easier (you can buy the maxspect heads separate from the controller)

I had a pair of gyre on my peninsula tank and hated cleaning them ever other week… I run four mp40’s and it’s more than enough flow. You can see pics in my build thread.. my tank is 6ft long and 3ft wide.

I'll pay a visit to your thread, just a quick question here, do you place them on the same side (say, the overflow side) or opposite to one another across the tank?

I have a 96x36 peninsula. I only have closed loops creating flow.

I had them both on the overflow side… the fins in the impellers are so close tighter they would clog up with algae so fast it was annoying! It was a chore to clean them out so I gave up on them lol.

That’s normally my go to! If I had the time when I got this tank I would have drilled it for a closed loop! I regret not doing it on my display… sigh… my next upgrade I will lol

I run 2 Sea Sweeps with Tunze 6255's on my 59×30×22. More than enough random flow with only 2 powerheads in the tank. Cord runs through the sweep.
I can turn the Tunze power up as the tank matures.
This system is 6 months old.

Hi, I ended up going with 2 MP 60's and 2 MP 40's on the far side, as well as a RedSea ReefWave 45. So far, I'm happy. The true test will be once the tank is populated with SPS coral.

I have 4 mp40’s and it rocks! You’ll be just fine.. my tank is 72x36 and 24” tall..
