I posted this on a previous discussion, but haven't heard back yet.

I'm sharing this here because 1) I think you all will get a kick out of this one and 2) I need an answer...

SO ....for the last 8+ years I have used a 950Magdrive with a 6 foot hose attached via a BRASS fitting. I use this thing anytime I need to move water around. I use it to circulate/ mix/ transfer etc.. Most recently I placed it my 32 gallon (trashcans) water mixing containers. So it mixes new saltwater at first, then I place it in my Freshwater RODI container

Throughout the years, I have NEVER been able to keep real corals in this home tank. (Xenia and GSP have done well intermittently).
My tank AT WORK does great btw, softies, inverts, etc..I dose a little AFR, with very small water changes. The small Biocube 14 at work is probably the reason I'm still in the hobby.

I recently started a new tank at the house, an IM75 ...I've put about $6k into this build over the last 2 years and finally put water in it this past March. I've been very hesitant to put coral or anything of value in here because something didn't feel right, I thought it was my pH (7.5-7.8)...

Yesterday, when my ATO was asking for more water I finally noticed this Brass Fitting flaw. To me, this explains every problem I have had, from dying inverts, no growth, and quick death of any coral I put into the system. I also have copper pipes in my home and run a 7 stage RODI system.

So now my questions are as follows:
1) Do I remove the live rock and sand from this system and start fresh? OR can I run Cuprisorb or something similar? How long?
2) For my water: Should I just return to using RODI from the store or should my RODI get rid of the Cu coming from the pipes?

As of 5/15/25: I used a SeaChem Copper Test, it is not indicating any Copper. Might be user error? How could there not be any with this kind of mistake? I decided to place a good amount (300ml) of Cuprisorb in a low flow area (filter sock region of secondary sump)

I think I would just stop using the mag drive pump, run fresh carbon in the tank and continue using my RODI. RODI will absolutely remove copper and I’d guess that about 50% of us have copper pipes in our home, no biggie if using a decent RoDI. Heck, your lfs probably has copper pipes, so using their RODI water would be same/same.

Well, this is complicated and those directions are for fresh water where an ion exchange resin might be used.

I would not rely on GAC to be useful in seawater. GAC will bind organics, and much of the copper will bind to organics, so some will bind, but not much direct binding, IMO.
