Holy cow Dan, how big is that clam? It's a Derasa right? You should add some pic's to the clam show off thread.

Wow!!! Im glad i just came across this thread!! Awesome tank!! I saw that you said you do large water changes weekly. But im curious as to how many gallons? I have a 120 gallon and my SPS just always look so so.. I know i have plenty of flow and im running 2 250W XM's. I do 20 gallon water changes weekley. So I don't know if I should up it.. Would love your advice. : )

Its about 18 or 20 inches and yes a Derasa.I have had it since the early days of reef keeoing for me approx 16 or so years

Well there are many variables that need to be controlled to achieve total success with acroporas(IMO).Large water changes help many systems that have excessive nutrients or contaminants but is not a cure all by any means.Best I can tell you is close daily observation paying attention to fine details,ie PE,color, growth etc.. and taking into account the small changes that you make as a positive or negative result is paramount.Building a data base in your brain that will tell you the right answer when you see a given coral look better or worse then previous observations dictate is the part of sps success that cannot be taught. It is a learned response and given enough time and a strong mind, anyone can grow acroporide species if this is accomplished. Most successful SPS growers are very in tune with there reef in this manner and I personally can tell if my Alk or MG is out of balance from just observing certain animals(canary in coal mine) and only use tests to confirm my observations as of late.

If you are not measuring alk daily and mg weekly, this is a good start.Keeping alk very stable and in range is important.Keeping PO4 in check is also a biggie.I suggest anyone with sps as there goal, should have a Hanna checker for alk and PO4 or something better and more accurate if possible.Getting a feel of daily flux is much easier with these and the results are repeatable
