I bought a Nuvo 30 l used and was wondering about a couple of things before I get this setup. First do I really need the protein skimmer or can I just buy new filter socks and the media baskets. And secondly where should I put the chaeto. I was wondering if I could put in with the return pump cause it can with a light for the chaeto. I appreciate any advice or tips. Thank you.

No, you don't necessarily need the skimmer. Especially if you're planning on a refugium. I wouldn't put the refugium in the pump chamber as it will almost certainly get clogged up. I'd use either of the adjacent chambers. InTank makes a nice refugium tray for your tank.

agreed. chaeto would clog up pump. personally I dislike skimmers and never used one, but people often use it along with a refugium if they have a somewhat high bioload

The IM skimmers (and nano skimmers in general) aren't that great, and if you plan to run a refugium that's a decent trade-off.

What I've seen some do is cut a slit in the black vinyl on the back of the tank where you plan to put the refugium and place a refugium light against it.

Here's the light for the back.
