hmm I would say scolly not maxima. At 3" there is no way at all I believe it is an acan. My maxima is only like 1.75-2 AT THE ABSOLUTE MOST. But it is still a cool piece at $1500 someone has to be a fool to buy it.

I don't think you have a maxima either, no one collects in the small area they are native to; they just don't enter the trade, though unscrupulous or ignorant people try and pass them off as such.

mussids are so hard to id, im kind of disappointed that rm would try to pass some weird mussid off as a acan maxima

Its fine, when I bought it it was sold to me as just a rare acan but labeled a maxima I got it from ReefReady regardless it is sweet and HUGE and I have never seen anything like it before. A lot of people ask me what the heck it is when they see it.. I dont know how many people I have had to say "NO you cant have it!" hehe :)

LOL! :hammer:

Now I see why they call the website reefer madness! I've never liked this site, something just seems wrong about everything...

I'd say its a nice lobophyllia polyp... $80 to $100 would be a reasonable price for this coral.

you guys have to remember, reefermadness includes the shipping and box fee in the price of the coral.....so the price must be due to fuel costs passed down by fedex... :hammer:

I'm starting to see why they posted that coral for sale on their site.

It wasn't to sell it, but to drum up talk about it. This is the third thread I've seen with a link to that piece. And I don't do that much surfing. There's probably many more.

They are getting plenty of free advertising by putting that piece up for sale.

I have done business with them a few times and I will have to speak up and say they have allways sent me great corals! One of the few sites that I have not been disapointed with.

I'll say that I've dealt with Chris a number of times and all have been pleasant. The corals are usually larger than stated (or at least seem so when you have them in hand) and the colors are usually pretty good (not as vibrant as the pics, but not too far off). That is a great marketing ploy, though, I guess. Too rich for my blood.

An off the hip guess for the unknown would be either Favia speciosa or potentially an Acan faviaformis? Just guesses without looking at pics of either...

rm selling this as acanthastrea maxima, which it clearly isnt'

http://www.reefermadness.us/RMD05115511.htm

i'm with you on this one....it's defintiely nice, but what is it? ...lol....it's similar to some Australian Scolys that came in to Toronto recently, i do admit.....but it's also similar to tracyphyllia or even some obscure species of symphyllia....bah! too much headaches!

no one, not even super-brainiac-reefers like Borneman or Calfo can 100% ID a coral without looking at the skeleton....there's no way around it.....that being said, we must give RM the benefit of the doubt.....but then again....they did generate a whole lotta talk and publicity for their site....kudos to them! lol

a. maxima does exist...just rarely collected, if at all....hell, I even have a polyp of a supposed a. maxima (and you gotta hear the story behind it, let me tell ya!).......even our major reef shop (ReefRaft) had a couple morphs of a. maxima....they were going for $800-900CDN if i remember correctly...yikes
