You can't just take half an hour and type it out??? Geez.
I don't think gazog was being critical - you just hit on a different use than we were on to. I think most see interceptor as just for redbugs.

Alot of people use interceptor for acans and chalice.
Sometimes they start receding for no reason. I lost some last year while others were doing great in the same tank. As a last resort from reading other threads about interceptor for acans and chalice I tried it and saved most of them. I dipped mine though for several hours floating them in the tank to keep the temp up and then again a week later. I did'nt treat the tank.
I don't know why it seems to work but it does. One person thought there were black bugs/worms on them and had pictures but I'm not so sure thats the problem since I did'nt treat my tank and had them recover.
I havent had any problems with them since.

I did have to move all mine to my 24 gal nano because my hippo loved to take bites out them so thats the first place I'd look.

If they are receeding you should frag off the dying portion or you might lose the entire colony. I wouldn't wait to do this and I wouldn't chance any areas near the recession that look iffy, frag those off as well. I have had acans get diseases for no reason, it happens but you must frag the diseased portions off. Consider interceptor if you cannot find the culprit. I hope it gets better for you

+1 on raising mg

Dude, frag away dying portions. If its a bacterial or protozoan infection thats killing your corals it needs to be done! Dips will not help in the long term imo.

I would like to know why you would recommend using something that #1 if used incorrectly can and will kill all
crustacean's in your tank, and #2 is only use to kill red bugs which irritates SPS but do absolutely nothing to
bother LPS? I mean is this something new? and what benifits does it have?

I agree on raising both the Alk and Mag. Mine all seem to do better when I keep both a little higher that the norms.
Plus Feeding my Acans is a MUST, I feed mine every 3rd day.

While interceptor can kill crustaceans it doesn't really have a negative effect on corals even when applied in higher dosages than recommended. If your corals are dying then whats a few crabs. The problems come from the aftermath of these crustaceans and pods dying and the fouling of the water, thats why water changes, carbon, and skimming are recommended.

There has been talk and a few photos of an aussie pest, a small black bug on lps, acans and chalices. A lot of well respected reefers have demonstrated that using interceptor helps when these corals look bad and display symptoms described above. I know little about fish and have none in my systems so I recommended the interceptor if the culprit couldn't be found. I have never had interceptor 'save' my corals but I do use it regularly as a preventative measure. My acans collection is doing fine :)

This is a thread I started that talks about potential problems with acans including bacterial and protozoan diseases, its a good read

This is a thread I started about my uses of interceptor. note. I used an interceptor with an added chemical

An update on my acans. Bonus points to the person who fingered the Hippo tang. I really think that she's the culprit. The acans that I put in the frag tank are starting to puff up again and are looking better. Same water params as the reef tank. I'm going on a Hippo hunting safari and move her to our fish only tank.

I also sent a formal apology letter to my Mystery wrasse.

IME the biggest culprit in receding acans is flow. You remove a pump to clean it and then when you put it back the flow in the tank has changed. For one its higher since the pump is clean, and 2 you really can't get the exact same flow you previously had. Even over time as the pump builds up algae/coralline etc, it will slow the flow down, effectively changing the flow in your tank.

In every single case of receding acans in my tank, roughly 30 small colonies and frags, if i simply move the acan to less or more flow (depending on which i thought was the culprit) it turns around within a few days.

I never spot feed my acans and I never dip them in interceptor or revive or TMPCC except for the first time it went into my tank. I've been able to save all but 1 acan from death.

Great thread, I recently started having a similar problem, which included some loss of color, on 4 out of over 20 acans. Others look fine, just these 4, and I have had 3 of them for 6 mos...........
Good input.

Update on my acan troubles

Just an update. I tried feeding more Nori to see if the acan problem would improve but no luck. I removed one hippo tang and the acans did not inflate. I finally removed the other one 3 days ago and all my acans are starting to puff up again and look great. They were difficult to catch as they were fish trap wise. The easiest thing to do was to remove the rock they were sleeping in. Worked like a charm!I never saw the tangs pick at them but that's only because I'm not at my fish tank 24/7.
