A friend of mine just got this Acro in a full tank buy. Anybody know what it is? My guess was tricolor or bonsai.

Yeah he bought a 90g full setup and that was the nicest piece. Anybody else have any input? Is it Garf Bonsai? That's was my first guess and that's what I told him it was. Anybody have the species name on the Bonsai?

I have always been told the Garf Bonsai is part of the Acropora Nana family. Your's looks a little stressed out/slightly bleaching though, but it should recover. The entire piece should be a dark purple with bright neon green polyps. Here is my frag to compare against.

I think it is stressed a little. I believe it was a long process to tear down that tank, move it to a new location and setup another tank to hold stuff. He gave me a little piece of it and it's deep purple with bright green polyps under my LED's.

Looks more like a tricolor (A. Valida) than a GARF bonsai.

Similar color but different structure.

Agreed. It can't be GARF Bonsai because you did not buy/receive it as such. So the even if it was once, the lineage is broken. GARF Bonsai is a specific acropora, and any purple and green acro should not be tagged as such. Leeroy Headlee (GARF Founder) would roll over in his grave.

So i would stick with Acropora valida or maybe Acropora nana.
