Acro polyp extension

The problem I see with mixed reefs with euphyllias and such is that people account for the flow on them but don't plan flow zones with really high flow for SPS, they should be closer to the pumps, my honest opinion here would be flow, more flow actually let's you have more light and nutrients. If the acros are on the other side it might not be enough, maybe switch the pumps around.
You can either have a lot of flow in the aquarium or acros closer to pumps it will go the same.

I have a flame angel but he doesn’t nip . I feed heavy so don’t see acros getting nipped
What other fish do you have?

If it were white bugs or any other parasites, you would not have PE at night either. In fact, many invertebrates are more active at night.

Acros can tolerate a lot of light. It takes active effort to bleach them. PE reducing during the ramping stage doesn’t make sense.

If flow was the issue, there would be no PE, even at night.

There must be something diurnal that’s causing the retraction. Just because you don’t see the fish nipping, doesn’t mean it’s not happening behind your back.

Yeah I hear you for sure. My mp40’s are pretty much directed right at the acros towards the top of my tank . With both returns blowing across the top of them . But even at 25% my torches are rocking pretty hard mid tank which they seem to enjoy. I feel like if I turn the pumps up any higher I risk damaging the torches. I actually did lose one torch that never adapted to the flow . Seems it’s a tough balance to achieve.

My polyps really didn't come out until after about a year and a 1/2. They were out really good at night but not much during the day. I have a 120 with 3 maxspect 350s running at 80%. One at either end and one vertical in the back corner. Lots of flow seemed to help.

On my aquarium normal acros are getting polyps out the next day, I can see how something like smooth skins would be different, but normal stuff is good straight away. I have direct flow and feed heavy. Like a roughly 800gallon/hour (actual 3000l/h), make the actual math, directed at one acro, polyps out day and night, and I want more on the same rock

When you say coming out the next day, do you mean when you are putting a new acro in your tank?

I owned the apogee 420 that was mentioned earlier. Had it stolen. Replaced worst is for $120 and it is just as accurate. Comparison tests show its with 1% of an apogee 500 series

Nice big screen and it doesn’t need to be connected to a laptop or have any conversion formulas applied. Does with the extension wand also

More likely culprit is bugs. That’s not much light for acros. Flow is a big factor then all you’r your other elements. As well as possible pollutants will keep them from extending. Check these off the list button to top you will find out what it is if not a mixture of these things.

Thanks! I’ll have a look at those

Yeah I should do an icp test. I can’t seem to get my RO water down to 0 . Bout 11 is what I’m getting it to and I just replaced both membranes and all the filters

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn’t trust that flame angel.

I know they are a reef safe with caution fish . I’ve had this one for about 8 months now and I haven’t seen him nipping any coral and I spend a lot of time watching the tank because I’m retired. Also he’s super fat cuz I feed heavy to try and deter him from nipping. I have a bicolor angel in my other system and yeah he’s a nipper but really he doesn’t do any damage.

In my experience fish are smart and they don’t do bad things like nip corals if they can see you. They do it behind your back.

Unfortunately feeding is not associated with nipping, in my experience. Once they start they do it more as a compulsion vs hunger. I’ve fed fish 3-5x a normal amount and 1 min afterward they were back to nipping coral

I don’t see PE at night either. The fish all hunker down at lights out . My other fish are 3 tangs a huge fox face, 5 clowns, 2 gobies, 2 wrasses, they go in the sand . Bubble tip, bunch of hermits and snails . So you think I can crank my lights back up ? I turned them down to 60% . Two xr30 a one xr15 .

JMO but angels will nip. Just what they do. May not do any damage but the corals know.

Yeah I had to get the acans out of my other tank because the bicolor angle was on them pretty hard. The flame angle doesn’t bother them at all yet anyway.

I’ve had regular Banggai and pajama cadinalfish be fine for years with my corals then one day my acans started disappearing. I had no idea why. Expensive ones that I was growing out and that were doing great for months. Then one by one they started receding and vanishing. I caught the cardinals using the chair method 10 feet away.
In person they didn’t touch them. When I got out of site they would approach and eat them.

If you’re not seeing PE at night even, I’d take a very close comprehensive look into parasitic copepods. White bugs are rampant on acro and torches. Take a flashlight at night and see if anything is running around on your acros. No good copepods should be on living acro flesh.

I chased my tail for months until I found them. Lost all of my tenuis and some other pieces. Wondered why my color, growth and PE stopped. Did a white bugs treatment after finding them and things turned around completely in 2 months.
