Hi all, maybe someone can help me.
I have a pest that is attacking my blue stag in random places, causing a white "fluffy" coating to form over the surface, this coating looks similar to scale insects on plants and the lesions typically measure 5 x 5mm.
I removed the " fluffy" stuff with underlying tissue using forceps and had a look under the microscope.
It seems that the white stuff is mainly mucous (possibly an immune response secretion), but I did get images of dozens of nematode like animals wriggling through this mucous. I also imaged many red/orange coloured "egg" sacs and they look similar to AEFW eggs in the literature.
Any thoughts, nematodes or AEFW or something else?
Incidentally, I did not pick up any AEFW, but that just means I might not have gotten enough sample!
I have attaches pictures. Picture 1 is of this mucous mass showing red "eggs"
Picture 2 and 3 is of the head of this worm and picture 4 is of the "egg" mass at 1000X magnification.
