My first marine tank was a 55G tank with an undergravel filter using crushed up oyster shells from chicken feed store. That is all we had back then. In 1970, after four years in the Air Force, I enrolled in the Texas Maritime Academy located in Galveston, Tx. Having taken a Chimical Oceanorgraphy elective, I was fascinated by the connection between ocean and athmosphere. First tank was a Galveston Bay biotheme. Water for tank was collected during an incoming tide. Anemone and Peppermint Shrimp were collected at rock jetties.

To make a long story short, I have been addicted for 45 years and would discribe my reef husbandry style as “Laissez Faire”. I believe in using natural food webs which recycle inorganic nutrients and detritus into live food to feed corals and fish. Most recently, nine months ago, I turned out the light in 25 year old mud/macro refugium to to create cryptic zone filtration.

Welcome to Reef 2 Reef!!

Can you upload some shots of your cryptic zone filtration?

Freddie

I will take Crabs advice and start a tank journal. Here are a few shots from yesterday. We can discuss anything you wish in tank journal.
