i have a young tank which i started last Sept. 18. It has been running for the past 3 mos and it is experiencing algae problems. Was able to siphon GHA but some parts my sandbed have signs of cyano. Photoperiod is from 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM ( Kessil A360WE with program simulation).

Last water param checking showed Nitrates of 5 to 10 PPM, while ammonia, nitrite and phospahtes are all ZERO.

Also it is the home to the following:

2 clown fishes ( fed every other day using pellets)
1 lawn mower blenny
1 foxface
Turbo Astrea snails (8 pcs)
Cerith snails (pair)
Nasaurius snails (pair)
Few coral frags mostly zoas

Is this just another phase that the tank is going through? will this take a long period of time?

I really envy those pristine sand beds

Hi,
It is time to choose a method to compete against algae.
Can be probiotic(Vodka, vinagre, etc), ATS, macro algae refugium , etc.
Water changes alone are a weak method to compete algae, ime.
My nitrates are also 5-10 and phosphates about .02, but I use vodka and 10 litres of media in sump(siporax, but can be any other). Almost no algae because I am "forcing" bacteria to take nitrogen and phosphorus available before algae .
Hope it helps.
