I have sand in mine also...doesnt exactly stay where I want it to but I have to have sand.
So yeah like a dummy I mixed crushed coral and sand, put the crushed under the LR and then the sand all around the outside. I think its been 9 years now and I just have a hodge podge of sand and crushed coral all through out the tank :P
I think worse culprit was fish and not current, yellow tail damsel just get a wild hair and decide I'm going to start digging here or there and making a mess.

Lol. The way my flow is...it just makes it pile on the left and right. Did carib sea special and it doesnt really blow much. Every now and then I just push it back and within about 3 days its just back over on the sides.

You can obviously grow some sticks, ever thought about doing a growout competition ? We have a new one starting up in about another month.
I've thought about it, but my QT process can sometimes be rough on new acquisitions and they can take up to 4-5 months before they settle and start growing :P.

Thats so impressive, I do not know how you guys pull off these tiny reef tanks. Im very jealous.
Well after so many years it's always the same stability.
Proper light, flow, and placement.
The 15 only has 9.5 g's of water.
I like to use dosers and use 2 kamoers and a Tunze ato on the 15.

I've already shared this on my current build thread, but this is my old acropora dominated reef:

I love lps and softies too but can't imagine a reef that's without some acros, there's so much more color and structure! And you can grow them really big without sweepers and stuff taking up too much space, you can really pack them in there! This huge stag cluster is the middle of the tank above before I broke it down for a move.

That stag is amazing, but my favorite is the yellow Fiji at its base!

I just setup my first SPS tank in October after being in the hobby 19-20 years and I'm loving it. Adds a new challenge

I really enjoy the sticks! Just did a reset and excited to see the new scape grow in. I have LPS but they’re just kinda easy and boring to me. They’re beautiful don’t get me wrong. But yeah I like the Acropora challenge.

IMO some sticks are easier than others. Some of the varieties that have been around for decades with different names like any of the Palettas, Stags, Slimers, etc. will grow like absolute weeds as long as you maintain rock steady alk/cal with trace supplementation. The tenuis varieties are the hard to grow type. Sometimes they grow with no issue at all and if your alk gets off by just a tad they commit sepuku and RTN.

Modern automated testing and dosing is what has made SPS reefs somewhat manageable now. If you don't have automation, just be prepared to do a lot of manual testing.
