I just got this frag today, I was wondering how does it grow? Does it incrust onto a rock or will it split and grow a new stem. How should I mount it. Right now I just have it stuck in the sand. Any insight would be appreciated.

It grows similar to zoanthids where they grow out and create new polyps

Oh ok, so I can get it to spread to another rock?

It's possible but the rocks would have to be touching for it to grow over the other rock

It's not typically encrusting. It will develop new skeleton and get larger, it may produce buds ( little alevopora). The sand bed is a good place for it in my experience. Congrats on the new coral, I like it.

Am I wrong on how it grows out? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. Please correct me if I'm wrong, don't want OP to get the wrong information :)

Alveopora tissue does not typically spread and encrust to other mediums but rather grows by skeletal growth like many other lps. I believe there are branching varieties though. Think of it like an Euphyllia, this coral needs new skeletal structure to increase in size. :)

I've got one that's been doing very well for 9 months now. It has enlarged its skeleton and may have new polyps (hard to be sure), but has not moved onto rocks that it's sitting on. Alveopora are supposed to like being low in your tank with low-medium flow, but mine is up high under bright light and in fairly ripping current, and seems to love it.
