Thought I'd start a build thread even though I've had the tank running for a couple months now. Its been a long time coming been slowly working on it for over a year. I am not much of a picture taker which my wife is always telling me I need to start taking more so we have pics of our two little boys growing up. So I don't have any pics of putting the thing together but I'll try to take some more and post.

The basics:
40 breeder bought during a Petco $1 a gallon sale
20 long sump also bought during Petco sale.
Tek T5 light 4x39 watt with ATI bulbs currently using 2 blue plus and 2 coral plus
Mag 7 return pump
Jebao wp25 and an older Tunze nano stream for flow
Ebo jager heater.
Skimmer is an older Aqua Medic turboflotor
ATO is a diy kit from aquahub using an aqualifter pump.

I drilled the tank for 2x1" bulkheads for drains made a homemade overflow box just like the gla....holes overflow. Also drilled for a 3/4" return. Painted back blue.

The stand is diy I made the frame out of 2x4 and skinned it with 1/4" plywood. Made the doors myself, my first time making doors, they turned out OK but know some things I'll do different next time. I made the stand oversized to hold a tank with a 48x18 footprint for if I very upgrade down the road. I like having the extra room around the tank to set things like when testing water or feeding. So I think when I do upgrade I'll just build another stand oversized.

I had glass cut at local hardware store for sump baffles and siliconed them into sump. I made three sections first is for drain and skimmer then middle will have a fuge with some rick and chaeto then return section with ATO.

Right now the skimmer I have works pretty good, pulls some nasty stuff out and smells like a sewage plant when I clean the cup. I'm thinking of upgrading it but now sure if I will.

I am going to be keeping a mixed reef but mainly SPS. I have the BRS three part stuff to start dosing when it comes to that. I have a few frags in the tank already I'll get some pics and post them this weekend.

I started with dry rock and seeded it with a piece of rock from a nano tank that I had running at the time.

There's a cleanup crew of various hermit crabs and several kinds of snails right now. I transferred a royal gramma over from my nano tank I took down. I've had him for at least five years and has survived at least five tank transfers and now he has a nice permanent home. Future fish plans include a pair of some kind of clowns and undecided about what else.

I like the bulb combo so far... I'm thinking of upgrading to either a 6bulb T5 or LED but going to see if this fixture grows SPS good, even if I have to keep the sticks in upper 2/3 or so of tank and have enough light for LPS and zoas lower I'll be happy

I heard six was to much for a 40b but I can't believe how's that possible. Everything I have read pointed to a 4 bulb being perfect for a 40b. You should have no problem from what I've read. I thought about doing a retro 4 bulb with two rows of rb leds

That's cool! I went through the same. I regret making 48x18 I should made a 48x24 since my upgrade was 120.

Added a few new fish and corals I picked up at the LEAR frag swap a couple weeks ago. First I got a nice pair of snowflake clowns I won in the raffle. I also picked up a small yellow tang, he's only about the size of a fifty cent piece. I know a 40B is too small for a full grown tang but I have plans to move him into a 93 gallon cube that I also won in raffle.

The frags I picked up include a nice chunk of ATL strawberry fields, a piece of ORA shortcake, a nice mini colony of red dragon, a blue tip stag, and a colony of tubbs stellata. The stellata bleached out some so I have it low hoping it will start to color up some. I have noticed a lot of polyp extension coming out of it.
