I bought this chalice a few weeks ago from a $5 rack. It was pretty bland brown looking but had a glowing yellow rim so I said what the heck. I think its a mycedium chalice, but the sales guy didnt know much about it.

As its coloring up it has shown a blue and purple body with green mouths starting to show. The rim has blown up and is now a crazy striking gold. This picture is unedited but was taken through those orange glasses lenses that help remove the blues from the lights.

What do you think it could be?

I’ve never seen a lepto with a different color rim before. While Google lens says lepto, I tend to agree with the shop that this is a mycedium chalice. Don’t know if there’s any name for it.

not Mycedium, note the visible thin septo-costae, thamnasteroid growth form, no separation between the oral disc and coenosarc, paper-thin edges of the colony, and non-inclined corallites.
Compare with actual Mycedium:

Leptoseris can come in some wild color variations. Mycedium chalice as well with other species are very distinguishable. In this hobby unfortunately people try to identify a type of coral by color which in my opinion is a mistake as corallites and other aspects should be used to identify coral species. That lapto ypu have is amazing and im looking forward to seeing it as it grows so keep some pictures for us posted as it grows🤙

Corals are as confusing as they are fascinating 🤣 I can't tell you how many corals I had in my reef tank that were totally different species than what I purchased. I never had luck growing leptoseris, I had a really cool orange lepto, Halloween leptoseris I believe was the vendor name and I always wanted to grow a nice colony but even though I grew chalice and other LPS pretty well, I just never had luck with leptoseris. Cant wait to see yours grow.
