I went and talked to a recruiter today and I was told they are not recruiting new Active Duty. I would have to join the reserves first and then wait a year or two to apply for active duty. Is the reserves a good place to start or should I look in to the Army? I was going with the Navy because of my father. He gave the Navy 20 years of his life. I am probably not going to make Active Duty a career. I am 26 and just looking to better myself and actually work toward a career but can not afford to go to collage and work full time. Is the reserves worth it?

I'm in the Navy Reserve. I did 10 years on active duty and then I joined the reserve after my enlistment. Been in the reserve for 13 years now. Any questions you have just shoot me a pm...

I'm active duty and have been since June 97.

Im in the active army. Im a blackhawk mechanic and crewcheif and have been active for a little over 4 years now. The army isnt a bad choice by anymeans even though ive never heard of a branch not taking any active duty at any point in time, theres always room in the military. Not to promote army over navy or anything, but dont let people talk down army. We pay the same as all the other branches, you get to pick the job you want as long as you qualify for it, and you can go to college while your in the active army (or national guard/reserves) and they pay for it. Then when you get out you get a "G.I. bill" which gives you E-5 pay (which is currenty about $2230 a month with 4 years in thats not including BAH, BAS, and for me flight pay) to pay for a place to live and food gas whatever. they also pay for your college for 4 years, up to the cost of the highest costing school in your state of residence on record. however you do not have to attend that school you can go to any school you like in that state. Meanwhile we have more soldiers then the marines, More boats than the navy, and more planes and helicopters than the airforce. The down turns are you will deploy as ive fought in central bagdad in the "surge" for a 14 month deployment and were about to get going on another 12 month deployment soon. Another downfall is being away from your family but its going to happen in any branch, but if your single you can travel alot if you like. we have bases in germany, korea, japan, all over the U.S. ect. But anyways enough about that if you have any questions for me id be glad to answer them for you. Also im pretty new to this site to so check out my pics and give me some ratings if you have time.

How do you deal with being on active duty and have a tank? Do you have someone else take care of it or do you just have to get out of the hobby till you are stationed?

Its a little harder when your in the military. Thankfully i have a wife that likes the hobby as well and she takes care of it while im gone. As for as breaking down and moving, its not impossible. What i would do when i change stations (only happens every 2 to 10 years) is sell all my live rock/live sand, and creatures to the local reefers and the LFS and keep my componets to set up at the next location. You could also get a friend or the LFS to keep your items for you and mail them to you when you get set up. It sucks but its the way things work in the military. Ive been at the same base for over 4 years and theres still no move in sight minus the deployment. Another idea is to keep a Nano tank thats not so complex to take down upon a move.

The Navy doesn't deploy nearly as often as the Army so you won't be gone as much....unless you pick a rate that is always deployed. That's why the Navy has a saying...."Choose your rate, choose your fate"
