I remember when it was supposed to be the best thing to have in a fuge. High mineral amounts, with steady release into the water column. I had some back when I first got into reefing, then my custom sump got broken. Anyone still use it? If not what changed your mind.

There's some members here at R2R that indeed use various muds, both packaged or even collected. I can think of at least one member that when he upgraded he scooped all the sludge out of the bottom of his sump and added it to the new tank.

I'm following to hear what others are using here, the idea seems solid to me, if the hype is real.

BRS released a Podcast today that discussed Algae scrubbers V. Refugiums and they were talking up Miracle Mud being amazing in the podcast from both sides of the coin. I plan to add some to my refugium in the next couple months.

Bucket has seen better days, but the bag is still sealed inside.
Yes that is the Miracle Mud we used long ago by Walt Smith. It looked like mud. The Miracle Mud that BRS has on the website is totally different.

I was around when Miracle Mud first came out. Some of the customers at the lfs that I worked at used it. I personally believe that it was good for reef tanks, although I never tried it personally. I did however dig dirt from my organic garden and put it under the sandbed in my sump.

I used it in my first tank in 05. I remember it making the water cloudy and the instructions saying it was normal and good. I didn’t have the miraculous results that were claimed, but I was only in it for a year at the time. I don’t think it would do anything extra for my tanks now, but maybe it could help someone else’s tank?

Very interesting. Are you still using compost soil in your sump? Pics? Anything noticeable since you did this??

I did it so that I could plant shoal and turtle grass in the sump. I was not successful with growing seagrasses so it's just an unpartitioned 30g XH with macroalgae, a return pump and drain. Even though the seagrasses did not grow, there may be benefits to the rest of the tank system. How does one know?
