So I know you shouldn't use the Apex outlet to turn the heater on and off as it can prematurely burn out the outlet. Now is it the ON switch with a high amp/watt device or the more constant ON and OFF? My main heat controller is letting my tank overheat .5-.75 deg leaving me with 1.5-2 deg temp swings all day and night, so wondering if I use the Apex to turn off the outlet when it hits X and then turn it back on when it drops that .1-.2 deg so the other controller will take the hit in kicking the heater on to save the Apex outlet.

if i understand the question right, you are asking if it the high current that kills the outlet, or the on off cycling that kills it.

it is the constant on off cycle that wares them out. i have mine set to allow a 1 degree drift from on to off. mine cycles about 10 times a day. there is a relay for each outlet. it is this relay that actual goes bad.

Yup, it's the on and off that kills the outlet.
Additionally, I wouldn't stress too much about the temp swings. You should see what happens in nature.
My swings are as follows... Doesn't seem to bother anyone in the slightest.
