What I’m about to share isn’t recommended, and in some cases, it can have negative effects on livestock—so take it with a grain of salt (no pun intended) and proceed with caution. just some insite on how some expired synthetic salts can surprise even the most experienced.
Over the years in this hobby, I’ve had the chance to try a variety of salt mixes available from local fish stores. Like many hobbyists, I started with Instant Ocean. It’s been a staple in the hobby since 1964. However, I occasionally ran into issues—sometimes the salt would be bricked up into a solid block, usually due to moisture exposure. I also noticed residue left behind in the mixing containers, and at times, the salt just wouldn’t dissolve properly.
Back in the day, LFS owners often ran into the same problems. I wouldn’t call it laziness—it came down to cost. For a shop, it’s about margins: break it down and mix it. Simple as that.
As for my current setup, I’m using an expired 2017 probiotic salt. it's been stored well and stabilized form powder. I’m well aware that this isn’t ideal, especially when it comes to starting a new tank, but I’ve been closely monitoring my parameters, and everything has remained stable. Despite its age, the salt has been working for me. dissolves fast, tank get cloudy (bacteria bloom) but then clears up. That said, I do plan to transition to a fresher mix soon to ensure long-term system health and stability before adding any livestock. Note: I am using water from an established tank when I break down and startup a newly cleaned setup.
