Hey everyone!

I wanted to make this post about the aquatic life hybrid t5 lights because when I was researching I didn’t find much about them other than the negatives which I will also include.

Negatives:
1. Cords come from either side of the fixture which makes wires hard to conceal. Aquatic life has made end caps that cover them but the complaint I’ve seen from there is that the length of the cords are short. For me this wasn’t an issue but a lot of people online were complaining about this.
2. The lights are not programmable or dimmable. For me this wasn’t an issue because I use Apex and have a controller for them anyways but also you could easily set up timers. As for dimmable I use radions inbetween them so the lights are only on for my peak hours anyways.
3. Each power cord only powers the two t5’s on its own side of the fixture. I don’t have a diagram but it would make more sense for a cord to power both inside bulbs then the other power cord would power the outside bulbs. This would help if you wanted better coverage with only two bulbs turned on. There is a super easy DIY to fix this at the link posted here. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/re-wiring-aquatic-life-hybrid.354772/

OK, so now that the griping is all over I will move on to what was missing from my searching online.

When I added the hybrid to my two Radion XR15 gen 4 pros it made a HUGE difference. I had those on the arm mounts over the tank and they were growing coral but my tank (Reefer 350 4’ wide) didn’t look like I knew it could. I have been reefing for 3 years so no where near experienced as some other members and all I have ever known was LED’s.

Here’s what I noticed immediately:
- Disco ball effect went away immediately
(You don’t realize how much you have until you compare it to your tank with T5’s)
- Shadowing went away
There was some shadowing on my acros and as soon as the t5’s came on it immediately lit everything.
(I did only have two puck source LEDs but the difference was night and day, literally)

Here’s what I noticed within the first week.
- Corals colors have already been coming out like crazy. I have Zoa’s on the sand bed and they look better than they ever have. Candy apple reds have more skirt color than they had when I bought them in their established tank.
Also all of my montis have been getting more vibrant.
- Water looks way clearer, I’m guessing this is due to more light and you can see much more easily.
- Fish look phenomenal under the lights.
I have two designer clowns, a yellow eye Kole tang, and a yellow coris and they all look much better.

ACCLIMATION:
This is one of the topics I couldn’t really find a lot of info on so I just made it up myself. My radions followed the AB+ coral labs schedule modified with a little less white. They ran to 48% from 12-7. I had taken PAR measurements before and was getting about 300 in the top hot spots but with only two lights the majority of my par was from 80-175 in the lower half of the tank. What I did was drop my radions down to 43% and started with only 2 bulbs (1 plug) on for 1.5 hours a day. I added a half hour every day and monitored the coral very closely. Once I got to the full peak with those two I started the same strategy with the other two bulbs (plug 2). None of my corals showed signs of bleaching or irritation and I’ve honestly never seen them looking better.

I chose the following bulbs to place in the fixture.
1 Blue+
1 Coral+
1 Purple
1 Blue+

Some people might think that’s too white but I’m more focused on the coral health than the appearance. Also the LED combo with this light set up looks IMO amazing.

If anyone has any questions let me know. I think I covered most things I wasn’t able to find in one place along with my review.

Thanks!

is that a 24" spacer between the fixtures ?
how come you didn't get retro fit T5 and build it yourself .. i'm guessing that you wanted a more finished appearance ?

I love my fixtures, and have done mods on both of them (single power cord). I will also be printing up a bracket for an apex auto feeder to mount on the T slot channel on top. Overall the product is what it is and rather budget friendly for a quality ballast, but the real gem is the support from Dave (@AquaticLifeProducts ). He's the main reason I bought my second fixture (24").

I don’t have the exact measurements of the spacers but I’m sure it’s close. I can measure it tomorrow. Yeah I just wanted a clean look. I still have cable management to take care of but the white fixture goes with my white red reefer and it was 300$ for the entire kit. I’m not capable of making something that clean unless I were to spend more I think.

Question, I have the SB reef lights ultra 57 which is a long strip panel LED light. Would I be able to remove those brackets for your radions and have my fixture sit in the middle space along the fixture? Essentially it would be the 2 fixtures with the LED "on top" if you will, with the light panel running along the middle opening

THANK YOU! I just posted earlier today asking a few questions in regards to this fixture. This past weekend I set mines the 48” model with 2 Radions xr30 non pro.

How high from the water level are you running them ? Mine aw about 10”, Currently I’m running the AB+ with a bit of extra white for 6 hours which I will reduce and keep the original AB+ with 3 B+ and 1 C+

Those panels that hold the LEDs are removable

The fact that you had two dinky xr15's over a 4' tank is the problem. You need 3 XR30's minimum in my experience. They greatly exaggerate the size a single fixture can light.

A single XR15 isn't enough for my 20x16" frag tank, and a single XR30 G4 Pro isn't enough for my 50 cube.

EDIT: Also a new version of the Aquatic Life fixture is coming out.

They definitely do exaggerate, I have 2 XR30 over a standard 75g and I felt for sps wasn’t enough coverage, definitely love how these these 4 T5s complete my tank, even on a few frags directly under the LEDs that are slanted just a tad I see some shadowing hoping these help

Agreed all day on that. That’s a lot of money for a 73 gal tank though! Maybe when I upgrade to a 250 gal!

Oh trust me, I'm right there with you. I just added the AL hybrid myself because a single xr30 g4 pro wasn't cutting it on my 24x24 cube. Ideally I'd have gotten a second radion... But another $800 didn't seem like the best choice.

Can you please post a link to someone's 4' tank with 4 or 5 xr30s over it.

What is the width of the SB Reef Light? I can let you know which width fixture you would need to hold their LED in the Hybrid.

Just mounted ours with 4 kessils. Loving the look of them and we’re planning on building a canopy. As you can see we’re still finishing up the build so I can’t comment on the lighting itself but what I can comment is that before these fixtures we ran an ATI with Two kessils. In my experience led plus t5 is the way to go.

That’s a 265 gal. 84” wide. So two AL 36” fixtures approx 6 inches apart

Link to news of new light coming out? Debating whether to buy now or wait for newer version (with one cord)

Hi. I am considering purchasing a t5 hybrid or maybe even the new DX18...and adding a Kessil or Ai later on. My question is this. I have a seaclear 50 acrylic tank that is only 15” wide. I see the bulbs are not placed at the outside of the fixture...will this give me a lot of spill outside the tank at the proper mounting height? Can I adjust the reflectors (or will I need to) to maximize the spread?
Also...my tank has an acrylic top...will this reduce par or reflect light in any way? Thank you!

They have a dimmable version with one cord.
If they included a controller, you'd have paid twice as much.
With a controller it addresses your concerns in #3
