Are elegance corals hard to keep

zoom in and u can see the snails it killed underneath near its skeleton. banished to the corner of the tank but still too big for my old 50

Do you feed? If so how?

I got this from my LFS that they aquacultured for 10 years. It looks similar to what I’ve seen others post about. I also picked up the Biota “Sprung Elegance” last weekend at a coral show. It’s pretty stunning in person.

The problem is that some elegance, especially those that have been in reef tanks for years, are straightforward, though I would not say easy.

New imports are often near impossible to keep alive, for reasons we do not understand.

I would not buy a newly imported one.

Ive read some posts about using oxolinic acid as a treatment for dying elegances with the suspicion of a bacterial infection. I was wondering if you had any thoughts about it and if you’ve seen any evidence of its effectiveness.

I have no knowledge of the conditions for treating elegance corals, sorry.

If I were to try it without learning more, I’d use a protocol as is used for incoming anemones, since those are of demonstrated effectiveness in many cases. There are several antibiotics that folks use, and I used Cipro that I bought from Dr Reef on my new magnifica.

FWIW, here’s my elegance, which I do not intentionally feed. It came from a reef2reef member who had it as a baby of an elegance that he had in his tank for 20 years. It has grown nicely in the last 6 months.

Hi guys my tank just hit 1 year. Here’s a pic attached:)

It’s a 40 gal breeder and I don’t dose and I do weekly water changes. Tank is mostly softies but I think I want an elegance coral. Are they impossible to keep? I kind of like corals that are bullet proof since I don’t dose I just do weekly water changes

Congrats on your one year mark. I have several elegance corals and never had an issue. I keep everything segregated so there’s no “chemical warfare” between stingers. They’re right next to my Duncan’s and I’ve never had a problem. I have them in a low flow area close to the substrate. I target feed them mysis, Benereef LPS and REEF pellets and occasionally dose Red Sea reef energy plus. They’ve never eaten any of my CUC and look fat and happy. I attached some photos for you. Good luck and don’t hesitate to get an elegance. They’re beautiful.

I've had an elagance coral for about 4 years. It looks very simular to richserpe's. It survied a tank crash about two years ago where I lost about 1/2 my corals. I never feed it directly, looks great but has displayed very slow growth. I don't know if this is due to it being a very slow grower or its just "hanging on". I'd say its probably double is original size from when I originally obtained it. My tank is about 6 years old.
I purchased a second elagance about 3 years ago, it was an electric yellow and was absoultely beautiful. I was told it was a recent import, the LFS had only had it a couple days. It looked great in my tank for about 2 days... and was dead in 2-3 weeks. I can't help but wonder if the multiple tank moves in a very short time did it in or if my tank was the issue.

I purchased a captive propagated elegance from Cherry Coral's a couple years ago and it has done well. Cherry Corals calls it their 'bullet proof' elegance.

I would look into dosing - at least alk and calcium - my elegagance is doing fine in 16g but it came from a friend who had the mother animal for ages

Not in my opinion. The flow in my tank is random but most of the time my elegance gets more flow than what your video shows.
