I am just interested to know what you think about your abilities to keep your corals. You may if you want leave a message telling the reasons why you think you are / are not a successful reefer.
Thanks for participating. :)

Not so far. My first attempt was a total DIY set up with T5 lighting. I didn't really understand the whole pest thing, and a nudibranch wiped out nearly every coral in the tank before I found it. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong when the corals started looking bad and never attributed it to a pest until I saw it one night.

I plan to do better this time, but I will take it a bit slower when it comes to adding things. I will also be treating them BEFORE putting them in my tank.

In my mind there is only one key ingredient to success in reefing.............an absolute refusal to give up! We all suffer multiple set-backs it seems and they can be devastating, both to the heart and the wallet. You just gotta keep educating yourself and keep getting back up.

I agree. And success or not is a matter of perspective in many cases. I think so far the results are interesting... I wish I could change the "No" for "Not yet". Because this is what it really means if one refuse to give up...

I have no trouble keeping LPS and softies. SPS will be the death of me. LOL I have to say in the last six months though I have been pretty successful keeping everything alive. I realize six months is not a long time to be called successful, so this could be a trick question.

Yes I do consider myself a successful Reef Keeper. One key ingredient for me has been knowing and adhering to my limits. Knowing that you can't keep everything and being ok with it. Doing your best with what can keep.

I feel that being successful in this hobby requires consistency and knowledge on several levels. Being consistent with testing, water changes and routine maintenance are just the basics. I believe you need to pay attention to your reef and pick up on small changes and make sound judgments based on trial and errors of others and yourself. Don't be afraid to test new methods and see what works for yourself, understand no two reefs are the same. Respect all fish and coral, understand they are living and provide them with the best, natural environment you can. I dont think all success is based on how fast you can grow coral or how big your system is... Its much more.

Isn't success tied up in the goals and expectations one has?

One reefer who just hopes to keep a feel corals might achieve success far beyond their wildest dreams by keeping some healthy SPS. Another reefer might decide to produce an immaculate SPS show tank with vivid corals. And they do a heck of a job too, but they never achieve their goal.

On the coral Vitalizer, what made you decide to dose as much as your dosing? I have 98 total gallons and the instructions calls for 4 drops. I've only been dosing it for 1 week and it appears to be helping.

You can do up to 2 drops per 25 gallons of water. System total water is about 150ish.

I like having the information out in different places on the internet. A good community here, and patients while I work through different issues during my journey of learning. I have my good weeks and my bad weeks so I am going independent vote on this one. If I could vote for both I would, and if I am voting the week. it would be a no:)
