Just thought I’d share a little wisdom about reefing and being successful, whatever that means to you. As you progress in your reefing journey, you’ll be met with many highs and lows. At first, everything is new and exciting. The motivation to keep going is high, as well are the expectations.

After a while, the living ecosystem you’ve created may change into something unexpected. That doesn’t mean you did something wrong, it just means that life does what it wants, regardless of your efforts. Sometimes a little understanding and some elbow grease can get things back on track.

So if your tank isn’t where you want it to be, remember that you’re not alone. Learning from setbacks is what fuels progress, not perfection. You can ask any Reefer, pro or hobbyist, and they will have a story of challenges. Everyone will encounter problems if they persist long enough. The perception on social media tends to show reefing at its peak, but rarely shows what really matters, the journey. The lows are just as important as the highs, and as long as you are persistent and willing to learn, you will become a better Reefer.

Your tank will always find ways to surprise you, but someday you may know how and when to react, if you don’t give up. None of us want harm to come to our salty friends, but it does happen sometimes. What you do in that situation will decide if you should keep persisting, or move on to other things. I hope you first choose to learn, and challenge yourself to do better the next time. You have a community here to lean on, so the tools are in your reach. I wish you success, but most of all, learning. It’s how we and our tanks grow! Happy Reefing!

This is a really good word! I try to take setbacks not as "failure" but as ways I can improve.

That's because each failure is an opportunity to learn. If we don't try new things, we can't improve, we can only stay stale. I remember growing up and watching my mom's fish tank. It was nice to watch the hermits and fish moving about, but the colors and growth of corals was missing. Everything was plain and white.

With the improvements in technology we are able to keep corals and fish that most people never would have considered even 20 or 30 years ago.

Thanks, I needed this. I buried my mother this past Friday and returned home on Saturday only to discover that my peppermint hog, my favorite fish, had somehow gotten in the sump and jumped out and died. Then my powder blue tang had ich and a little white on him. He died, followed by my anthias, clown fish, and midas blenny, which has disappeared. The water parameters in my 120-gallon tank were good, with the exception of the alkalinity, which was 6.7. My blue hippo is alive but very quiet. My rabbit foxface, cleaner wrasse, goby, other wrasse, and other clownfish are okay. I was devastated and feltlike giving up. My tank is beautiful, but to lose four fish is hard, specifically your favorites. My tank brought me joy while dealing with the illness of my mother. I am treating the tank with Reef Medic. I will see what happens this weekend. Next time, I will only purchase the most resilient fish. It is hard seeing them die.

Here here!
I know me personally am going on my 7th year of reefing this year, wow time flies
I don’t know that I’m good at the sw hobby but sure do love it, have had so many experiences that I finally am feeling like I know what the heck is going on and don’t knee jerk react to most things 😂
I saw a yt video a few years ago with a southern gentleman and his closing advice was

What ever your tank is, it is yours. Take pride in what you have, it is yours.
His words ring in my ears when I’m cleaning glass, doing annuals or just elbow grease that is needed….such a good mantra
Even the smallest saltwater tank with an inhabitant will wow the average person any day

“no worries my friend, for you have not failed. It may not be toast but you are good at carbonization of flour”.
