Well sure! But in 1990 they were rather rare and fetched upwards of $6-8,000. Even today they aren't bred in significant numbers and still fetch big money. I think we paid $1500 for our harlequin, she was just a chick and barely had her feathers. We had her for about 5 years and had to rehome her, she was getting destructive and wanted constant attention, that's hard to do with a bird that will live literally 60 years or more. :smiling-face-with-tear:

We used to own a harlequin macaw, it was the loudest, most obnoxious parrot ever. It could scream so loud your ears would ring, if you reacted to it the bird would do it again, that's what it wanted. No one messes with a macaw, they are capable of opening Brazil nuts fairly easily lol. They are fairly dangerous parrots if they aren't bonded to you.

I have a Harlequin. You are so right about their obnoxious scream.

Or my screaming dog lol. She screams like a baby when I trim her nails for the first paw, then realizes her screaming wont get her out of nail clipping day she just flops and lays there all calm. Dont have a video of her doing that but here she is lol (she really likes my dragon too) lol

Sorry JoJo, et. al! I know I said I wouldn't, but I'm being completely serious and adult this time ;-) Ehem,

I have wanted a parrot since I was a kid; what great birds :) When I was a kid, I was great friends with the other kid that lived across the street (we are still friends, 40+ years), and his father had a Cockatoo, Peaches. A very cool bird, sometimes when the family traveled I'd take care of Peaches. But Peaches would scream and squawk, and we could hear it clear across the street sometimes lol! I can only imagine the big Macaws!

And from what I've read, a Sun Conure can really wake you up, even though they are little guys :)

Alas, I have cats, and at least one particularly predatory cat, so even if I could keep the cats from the bird, having a parrot would be nothing but stress for me and the bird..... But someday....

For those of you birders out there, I do live near a really great LBS (local BIRD store). He does some work with a local rescue:

Have many of you read "Alex the Parrot"? I *think* this woman actually showed that the African Grey parrot in particular was capable of at least rudimentary cognitive thought. Meaning, this bird didn't just "parrot" what it hears, this bird was capable of "listening" and responding "intelligently".

Unlike the parrot that @KrisReef had in the 90's that just screamed, "500 Hz, 500 Hz!"........

Oh man, I really am sorry! I swear, that's it, and I'm out :) I'm so, so sorry @KrisReef, I don't know what I think sometimes!!!

Pet stores are also part of the overpopulated parrot problem. You can reach out to any rescue and ask about volunteering. A bird will find you there ;) when you hear the stories and then get to know them, that's when you really get it.

I also have three cats and two dogs. The birds are in separate rooms and when they are out, the cats and dogs are put up.

Thanks for your reply! The store I linked above is definitely, positively not a typical pet store. I've never met someone so dedicated to birds and their welfare (no offense). He is very well known in this area for the shop and what he does with rescues. He won't even think of selling you a bird if you're not fully "vetted" through his process. Many around here like to stop in the shop from time to time to get our bird fix.

I'm not a bird expert, but please don't judge that store harshly. I think if you saw it in person and met Paul you'd be impressed with what he does :)
