My ATS is doing great. I clean it every 3 weeks or so. When I do, I scrape it off and then put it back in. The leftover, dislodged bits of algae rinse down off of the substrate and get returned back to the tank. My tangs, who in some cases had eaten seaweed and shrimp just a couple of hours earlier, WENT CRAZY. It didn't look great, but it settle quickly. I haven't found it settling and taking hold in the DT at all.
SHOULD we be using that algae to feed our omnivores? It MUST, but how does that algae differ from phytoplankton? The little bits of algae seem pretty similar at that point , tiny autotrophs. Is that fresh algae better for the fish than dried seaweed?? My coral doesn't seem like the cloudy mess of algae bothers it. It doesn't seem like it loves it either - I feed phyto also.
