Bad Experience with Emerald Crabs

Brown or black claws normally means it's a gorilla crab.

How do you tell the females from the males?

Male vs Female Emerald Crabs

I heard female emerald crabs are smaller and less prone to attacking fish and eating coral. Is this true? What are your guys experience? Thanks and Happy Reefing!

Also the females are smaller and have small claws in comparison to males.

I have one in a frag tank ive been trying to catch for a while now, when small they are great but this crab is a monster. Most issues have been pulling or breaking a fresh frag off the plug due to the size. Ive also seen peppermint shrimp nip at corals before. Like most inverts, great till a certain size especially in a mature reef tank but otherwise in a frag system.

Herbivores crabs have spoon shaped pincers to scrape algae from rock. Omnivores and carnivores crabs have pointed tipped pincers. Here are pictures of Emerald crabs. Green to blend into the algae, It is hard to see and find my Emerald crabs in my tank. I have algae outbreak in my office tank because my staff over feed my tank when I was on vacation.

Here is a picture of the Emerald crab. Notice the shape of the pincer tips.

IME the male emeralds start going rogue once they get to a certain size. I had one that took up toppling live rock as a hobby. I couldn't believe he was able to move such big rocks until I saw him do it. Another male took a liking to my healthy frogspawn out of the blue one day and started going to town. Never had any issues with the smaller clawed females though.
