Beginner clam questions

Considering possibly a clam. Been reading, They need high PAR? How would one fit in this busy little tank, I could add a shelf, etc.. How does one "mount" a clam, does glue interfere with the screw-in foot thingy?

They need very strong lighting first and foremost. They also need good water quality and stable alk and calcium.

They are living animals and they can and will move so they should never be glued. Just place it down and it will position itself.

Depending on what kind of clam you get, they would be on the rocks or the sand, you have to research the specific type that you want and place them accordingly.

Personally, I think the rock work can go a lot higher to give more space for more corals (or clams). Its busy down below but empty up top. Just my 2 cents.

That tank looks very small to house a clam. i believe it is recommended to have at least a 30 gallon even for a small clam like a Crocea. You should definitely stay away from the larger varieties.

I have always put the clams (crocea and maxima) directly under the light almost touching the water surface during small water changes. You should never glue down a clam directly. They have byssal thread that allows them to anchor themselves to rockwork or move around when it decides to. I think most people in the hobby would give them a small pebble to attach their byssal thread so they can be relocated, but I always leave them attached to the rock directly and just cut off the treads from the nearest possible point to the rock to remove it without problem.

Not all require intense lighting.
Not all like to sit on rockwork.
Derasa fine in LPS level light and can be happy right on the sand bed.

Thank you all for giving me a starting point for focussing down. All points carefully considered and understood. I have a few sediment agitators, thus the filmy appearance, they seem to enjoy the gig. 25 Gallon AIO.

Personally I like to try to be as knowledgeable as possible befor buying something. I don’t think it’s a good idea to just buy any clam or any other animal to experiment if it lives or not.

No lol. It’s just a little less guilt to not kill these organisms we harvest

To the original poster, a Derasa is a great starter Tridacna. Your lighting looks fine and Derasa reside in the sand bed.

Fwiw my deresa, is on my sand bed almost in the corner of my tank. It moved further away from the light or closer to the powerhead. I assumed the latter in order to get a better laminar flow. It was between rock islands before it turned 90* and scooched some.

You're dismissing a request for information by misdescribing it as 'asking permission'.

You're using a tu quoque (look it up; you'd love learning about fallacies, I can tell), instead of addressing the question (which is about Tridacna clams and novice keepers), which -- like most fallacious claims -- is exactly not getting the point.

You're apparently completely unaware of the fact/value distinction (e.g. we should do this/we do do this).

You're assuming that all reefers are as irresponsible as you are recommending in "experimenting" instead of making educated and prudent care decisions.
