OK, it won't be until May of 2013, but my wife and I are going to Placencia, Belize. It's on the coast and I'm hoping to get a beach snorkel (I understand there is a very near shore reefy area) and 1... maybe 2, full day snorkel trips out to cays in behind the barrier reef. If anybody has been to Belize I'd been interested in any info you want to share. The Placencia area is newer and growing, so there isn't much info about the area. If anybody knows anything about Placencia, I REALLY want to hear what you have to say. We will only be there a week and it's a 70th birthday gig for my wife's retired boss. She is renting a big house and has asked her kids and spouses along with her brother, his wife and their grown daughter to come along. We are the only non-family being invited. So other side trips to Mayan ruins, a jaguar sanctuary, a jungle river trip and kayaking in the mangrove estuary are other trips that will probably happen. Not to mention some time on the beach and hanging around a local pub or two!

Any info will be much appreciated.

Ron

No info to offer but wow sounds like fun!

Never been, but probably sometime in next yr or two for us. If you are comfortable I'd highly recommend putting a dive on the agenda. Belize has some world class diving and you see so much more than when snorkeling. If you don't have/want a full cert you can probably do a "resort" dive 1 day cert.

I've only got my open water dives to do and I'll be certified. But I'm doing this with my wife and others who don't dive, so I probably won't dive either. I've done several resort dives and honestly, I find snorkeling much more enjoyable and colorful. I find diving like being an astronaut on Mars with lots of hardware, snorkeling is like being an avatar on Pandora, you still need equipment, but it's much less intrusive into the fun of the moment.

I expect this will be fun, I just want to find out some first hand info about Belize in general and Placencia and snorkeling there inparticular. Trust me, when we get back, photos will be shared!

sounds like it will be a great trip!
