Hi All
I was wondering if there was one algae that was better then another for nitrate reduction. I know a lot of us use cheato, but does say calupera remove more nitrates or another species?

I run chaeto in my 16 gallon cube and it is the only filtration. No skimmer and I tried no water changes for the last month or so and nitrates are unreadable on red sea low range kit. This was with 2 small clowns and a goby.

Only have chaeto in a 2 gallon area of the all in one compartment.

Hope that helps.

chato. its easy too.
I do like to have some caulerpa too as it will EXPLODE if you have a spike or just increase, but the down side itll choke out stuff and get in to everything, go sexual, cause yellowing etc etc.

On this topic, what does everyone suggest for a display refugium? Chaeto isn't the best looking macro out there.

This is where a display refugium comes in. You can place different types for different reasons. Reds, greens, and even blue macros.

Can you actually grow macro like Chaeto in Santa Monica turf scrubbers? I have one and I agree it works great for what its meant to do. But never heard of anyone growing chaeto in those! Did you make any modifications?

The best algae would be green hair algae.

People who have other types of macro algae in their fuge can still get hair algae, how? Because hair algae can use even the tiniest bit of nutrients to get a hold.

Scrubbers can grow other kinds of algae on them too (just by chance) but hair algae is usually the primary algae that grows, because it is fast and efficient and starves out other algae.

Lots of reefers who have a fuge and a scrubber have had the algae in the fuge die out because the green hair algae out competes it.
