So for mother's day, I am getting a clownfish, finally! However I am now wondering, should I get a pair or just one for now and the second later? My tank is cycled, 40 gallons and so far all I have is a single demoisale, some hermits and a few snails, and some macro algae. I want to take this slow and not over populate, but I also want to be sure the fish is happy.

Depends on the type. What kind are you looking at?

Probably just the average percula clowns. The cheapest ones. I want Picasso, but I want to ensure I can keep the cheaper ones happy and healthy before moving up to a pricier fish.

Or the Ocellaris. Whichever is the most common to find and cheapest. I mix them up a lot. I do believe it is the Ocellaris though.

I have a percula and ocellaris pair (wouldnt recommend mixing species though) and they are much more fun to watch when you have two imo. Although ocellaris tend to run cheaper, more peaceful, and are very hardy if that's what youre going for.
