Hi, I'm in need of some wisdom and critical thinking. So here's the situation that I would like to present to the good of the order: I have a Biocube 29 gallon mix reef tank that I'm having a heck of a time with trying to raise its PH. The current range of my PH vacillates between 7.6 and 7.8, which technically is not that bad. However, I'd like to keep a thriving tank where my corals are lively and growing fast, and as I understand, the optimal PH for creating that ideal environment is between 8.1-8.4. So I'd like to raise my PH by at least .5 units. Is that too much of a feat?

I have found a way to raise the PH through the addition of Kalkwasser, but it's not the easiest thing to administer for a tank that has minimal evaporation and such low capacity. I literally have to go through a gallon of Kalk mix every other day if I want to keep a PH of 8.2 or 8.3, and that would translate to a lot of dollars and maintenance nuances, not to mention a drop in Salinity of about .003 in SG for every gallon of Kalk mix added at max concentration (2 tsp of Kalk /gallon). So much for creating a stable thriving environment.

I have also tried running an air line from my skimmer to the outside that created no change in my PH.

Is there any other way to keep my PH up. I'm thinking there's just too much CO2 in the water due to the respiration of the organisms I'm keeping, but you be the judge. Here is my stocking list (sorry I'm not sure the accurate name for all my corrals, so please humor me):
Fish: 3" Yellow Tang, Med-sized Dottyback, Six-line Wrasse, Three Chromas, Watchman Goby
Invertebrates: Sand Sifting Starfish, Brittle Stars, Pistol Shrimp, Fire Shrimp, a few snails and hermit crabs.
Corals: One Montipora Plating, Brain Coral Frag, some branch SPS Acropora, 2 Acan frags, One Suny D Polythoas, Blue Berry Zoas, Fire and Ice Zoa, Eagle Zoa, Birdsnest Coral, Bubble Coral, Hammer Coral frag, Leather Toadstool Coral, Frogspawn, Two misc SPS Corals, 4 Duncans, A couple other SPSs, Candy Cane Coral, Favia, Two Mushrooms.

Tank Parameters: Ammonia: 0 , Nitrite: 0 , Nitrate: 40 ppm, Calcium:423, Alk: 9.3 dkh, Mag: 1290, PH: 7.8, Phosphate: 0, Salinity: 1.023

Thanks in Advance

If your corals are happy and growing.. NO need to chase for the pH.

I have the same pH issue too but didn't bother to do/add something to bring it up.[emoji846]

I have the bio-Cube skimmer. I know, it's a lame skimmer, so I've already got a Hydor on its way. I also have a Bio-Pellet reactor under way for controlling the high Nitrate issue.

The whole thing is that my SPSs are not really growing, or look that lively. They kind of have a brownish tint to them. So I'm attributing that to my high Nitrates as well as the lower than preferable PH.

before chasing the pH. Fix your nitrates first and make sure your SPS is getting enough light, otherwise they'll turn brown as well. I'm not a pro but I learn lots of stuff in a forum like this...[emoji846]

Oh cool. How do you like it? I don't have a refugium. I thought maybe it would be overkill for a bio-cube of that size to install a refugium. I'm using the stock lights that came with the Coralife BioCube 29.

In that case most probably your light isn't enough for you SPS. Try to move your SPS on top.But try to fix your nitrates first then see...

Wow, That's a beautiful set-up mate. Seems pretty solid. The colors are amazing.

Ok, so hopefully the bio-pellet reactor and the upgraded skimmer will put a good dent in my Nitrate problem, as well as marginally help my PH, I would think?

What is the range of PH for your tank?

my pH 7.8 during daytime. Try to setup a refugium with chaeto if you can..

I had a problem with low pH for the first few months after setup. Even with a fuge full of chaeto. Ended up using soda lime pellets in an airline pass through which stabilized my pH at 8.2-8.3. I also added a higher wattage purple light over the fuge that really helped. Search the forums for co2 scrubber for your supply list. Also as for the biocube skimmer, that thing worlds like a champ now that it's getting fed air through the scrubber.

I have a similar sized tank, evaporation is about the same. I just add kalk to my ato reservoir, it's simple and I notice no changes in my salinity. My alk remains stable at about 8.5 dkh and calcium stable at about 440 ppm.

How long did you run an outside airline to your skimmer? I did the same thing, and my pH slowly came up over a matter of weeks from 7.8-7.9 to 8.2-8.3 on average.

I had it ran for about a day with no change. So it would take weeks for it to make it come up? I don't have an ATO as the evaporation is very minimal. Were you running kalk at the same time as running the skimmer tube to the outside? If so, which method do you think contributed most to the risen PH? Thanks in advance for your insights.
