Sad to say i think its a gonner. I tried saving what i could but it really doesnt look good...

I did learn to use my light timer ;) and everything else is doing good.
I have a nother frag of that same birdsnest i bought last week in a darker part of the tank and so far so good. However i still need to buy a test kit to get real numbers rather than just taling my water to petco and them using strips...

Just remember going forward that light, nutrients and flow all have to be working – and birds nests are inherently harder to flow and light due to their form.

Good luck! :)

It is a lot to learn, so the best advice I can give you is to go slow – even slower than you have been.

I don't see anything wrong with starting a tank and after a year only having a single fish and a couple of corals. Make sure you can keep them happy, get all your routines down and make your mistakes and learn from them before you finish stocking out the tank.

Trying to stock the tank all at once in the first year before you know jack is a mistake in my opinion, but possibly the most common patten toward failure that people follow.

@Randy Holmes-Farley spends an awful lot of time writing papers and answering chemistry threads here on R2R – so make use of that to the full extent you can.

If you need a place to start, read and understand everything you can about alkalinity. It's something that cuts across the biology and chemistry of the tank, so it makes a good learning tool. :)

mcarroll's Favorite Chemistry Links also has some good stuff, including a great collection of links from Craig Bingman. Drop a ling in that thread if you find anything interesting! :) :)

Thank you so much i apreciate it a lot. Yeah i tend to get over excited lol and im to godamn impulsive which my friends will have no problem pointing out. I have 9 tanks at home 2 saltwater tanks and a 90gal that is in the works. For now im focusing on a custom stand and canopy for it but Im definitely moving too fast in other regards lol but i cant help it. The 90 will be my ultimate challenge and that i know cannot be rushed. For now im using my 2 saltwater tanks as a stepping stone for that in the next year. These forums and the internet really are a blessing!

How do you use this under water?

You do not. You sample at the water surface.

Although one of the members here used his (with a corded, remote probe like the "lx-1010b" model) submerged and it seemed to give sane results and didn't immediately quit working, so....maybe for $10-$15 it's worth the risk?

There are submersible meters, but they are not in the same price category....to my knowledge Milwaukee makes one and Seneye.

I haven't had any need to measure below the water line though, and I've been doing it this way for a while now. For what that's worth. :)

I have the one with the remote probe. I just put it in a plastic bag (only 1 layer over the sensor of course) and twisted it around the cord. Then zip tied it 3 times to "seal" it up a little. Worked like a champ and the sensor/probe stayed dry. I wouldn't do this for anything more than a few readings (you don't want to leave it underwater) since I'm sure it'll start leaking after time.

@Waboss what was the transition in readings like between just above and just below the water surface? Just curious! :)

I work with various grades of diffusion in my profession. I dont think it makes enough difference in how ditry your water is IMO to really care about. testing dry will likely at the same distance result in little loss.

it is something to look at if your curious, or like learning stuff!

Test your alkalinity for swings. A stable alkalinity goes a long way with SPS. I lost two colonies of that same species of birdsnest to dKH swings when I started out. Dose your alk daily or get a dosing pump.
