Black Leopard Wrasse

My lfs has a beautiful black leopard wrasse, which is eating frozen mysis shrimp there. I did some quick research and they can be hard to keep. I was wondering who has kept them and if you guys have any advice on keep one.

I have one for the last few months - disappeared for 3 wks then was out for a day and them MIA for a further 2 wks. Now she's out for 4 to 5hrs a day. Constantly hunting for pods.

Been having one a couple years now, ran him through copper power and everything. Eats anything in the tank, only thing I do is make sure they’re eating good for about a week or so before I start the quarantine process

what do you feed yours?

I’ve lots of leopards but cannot keep the black. Always just wastes away on me (despite deworming in QT).

It eats everything from pellets to LRS and seaweed

thats good to know. at the lfs it was happily eating on some mysis though it seemed shy to eat

If you run it through a qt and treat especially for worms and flukes they're no harder than similar wrasses like halichoeres imo. That said, some leopards like ornate are hardier. If it eats mysis and you have sand in your tank I say go for it!

i have sand in my tank and eating mysis, just need to get the qt tank out. whats the best way to treat for worms and flukes?

Metro soaked food for internal, and prazi for external. Metro food for about 2 weeks, and prazi twice 5-7 days apart.

Make sure he has a dish of sand in the qt too. Be aware that all fish can get other parasites (ich, velvet, etc) and those should be considered as well as with any qt. Wrasses are just particularly susceptible to worms and flukes due to sleeping under the sand.

I have found Fenbendazole in the food to be the most effective.

I second this. I bought one too same exact thing. Gone for like 3 weeks .... thought it was dead then boom out of no where his head popped up peaking around. Next day was out and about looking for food.

I had only read after my purchase that they are hard to keep. Honestly would have never thought that.

IMO, very bias opinion, Black Leopard, Macropharyngodon negrosensis, have unrivaled beauty in the Macropharyngodon genus. The male scale are florescent aquamarine color. They are no more difficult to get to eat than other Leopard wrasse, but far more beautiful. Below are pictures of my Male and Female Black leopard. The florescent blue color almost show through in the picture below.

They are no more difficult to get to eat than other Leopard wrasse, but far more beautiful. Below are pictures of my Male and Female Black leopard. The florescent blue color almost show through in the picture below.

Mine looks like the second picture right now, and always love see it out in my tank looking for food

Definitely agree. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get one to live yet. Tried one from the LFS and one from live aquaria. Live aquaria one died almost immediately. LFS one buried in the sand and then was never seen again.

I actually have better luck with Choati and even Potters than the black so far.

So how is she today. This is mine today. Very beautiful wrasse. This female was in my DT 6 months ago. I have another Male and Female in QT. This one change sex so I did not added my other two. Rather I sold them to my friend.

Beautiful fish, unfortunately mine decided to go carpet surfing a few months ago (got through a crack in my cover) debating if I wanna get another one. They are a beautiful fish though worried my melanurus wrasse might try to fight it
