I found this guy hitch hiking in on my TBS live rock... I wasn't planning on having any urchins since a valentini puffer is on my eventual stock list, but since it'll be a while before I add the puffer I figure he can stay for now and munch on the nuisance algae. Can anyone tell me what kind he is? I didn't research urchins beforehand when I was planning out the tank because I wasn't expecting to have one, so now I'm scrambling to find out all I can!

He's definitely not a long spine... Maybe a pencil urchin? What do you guys think?

If it was TBS rock likely a Florida purple spine urchin. I had them keep hatching from nowhere the first year I had the tank. I probably gave away 8 or 9 of them!

That would make a lot more sense considering it sounds like the pencil urchins are from the Atlantic and Tampa Bay is on the Gulf. Thankfully my LFS would happily take any extras I get for store credit, so having too many is a problem I'd be happy to have :D !
