Brs rodi replacement orings too thin?

I have a brs 7 stage rodi unit along with a several other reactor/filter housings (all the same, standard 10 inch style housings). I ordered a bunch of replacement orings from brs and every single housing leaks now. Brs is working this on thier end but I’m curious if anyone has a source for these orings? The originals are 4.5mm/0.177in thick whereas the replacements are a bit thinner at 0.141in thick. Basically the canisters bottom out in the housing before creating a solid seal. The housings drip about 3-5 drips per minute now. I shut off the rodi after making enough water for the time being. I’m worried that brs will not be able to source the correct orings, even though the housings are brs units. I don’t drive and can’t see much so driving around and trying to match these up isn’t happening. Googling, it appears that the thinner 0.14inx3.5in oring is commonplace. The only 0.18in thick orings for filter housings I ran across were 5.5in diameter. I found apec has a type a and type b oring, stating one is slightly larger than the other but they don’t list the actual dimensions. Thanks for any help.

This is interesting as I have an extra set of o-rings (from BRS) for my 7 Stage unit as well but, currently even after three years of use I have not ever had to replace any o-rings, currently. I've had them for years as I bought them when I purchased the unit. I can tell you've done your research as I am also finding that the .14" o-ring is common place. Interesting enough, I did find an o-ring made by Danco (DANCO #116), a 3.5" OD o-ring that has a thickness of .1875" (3/16) with an ID of 3.125". Unfortunately they are only sold in packs of 20 that I have found. I don't know if that will work but, it sounds like it may be a possibility?

With that being said, those are the specs but, if you do the math on OD, ID and thickness it doesn't make sense as it would seem the wall thickness would be .375" not .1875". Weird. I might order a pack and test them for fun.

Also, in the reviews section on these o-rings on BRS's webpage, reviewer named Oscar mentions that these o-rings (below) worked very well. Give that a look when you get a chance. I'm really surprised how many thousands of these systems BRS has sold but, we do not here about this issue as being more common. O-ring Oscar mentioned below. Might be worth looking into at only $1.00 each.

Thank you for this info. I’m checking into it right now. You would think that brs would add this size oring to inventory.

I've found not all canisters seal on all mounts. I don't remember brands but I have some that seal fine on the threaded mount they shipped with but won't seal on others. My fix was to use a belt sander to remove some of the material from the top of the canister so it can thread in further and compress the seal. I assumed all 10" ro canisters would be the same but it appears they are not.

This would probably work in my case as well as it sounds exactly like the issue I’m having. I’d rather get the correct orings as I would certainly screw up sanding down ten canister housings with my vision and dexterity issues these days. I bought all these from brs, so one would think that they would have orings. They are working on it and I’m guessing I’ll get their final answer today or tomorrow. The change to the thin style oring must be somewhat recent as one of the reactors is only two years old. The rodi unit is about five years old and a couple reactors came from my last tank and must be 15-20 years old. They all take the same size oring. Weird.

I'm sure they'll fix you up. Mine we clear and solid white ones so definatly different canisters.

Have you tried to lube up the old rings to see if they will seal?

The next thing to try that has helped me(at work) is a bigger cross section oring but a smaller diameter. You stretch the oring to your diameter making the cross section smaller. Probably won't help you much here, just talking out loud.

Well brs came back as I had expected. They only stock the thin orings and cite manufacturing tolerance differences of housings, canisters, and orings. They credited me for all the orings and are sending out some molykote in hopes that will work. I have always used silicone oring lubricant (super lube fda approved silicone oring grease) so that isn’t the issue here but free moykote is appreciated. Plus the old digital calipers don’t lie. Off to order those orings from the oring store mentioned above.

Edit. Ordered twenty orings so that I have spares on for the next change out in five years! Ha. I’ll post back after I get them to confirm if they work out or not. Thanks everyone!

Any update on this. I have several canisters from BRS. I imagine when they switch to a different vendor from china, they are slightly different. All of mine were bought at different times and you can tell they are different sizes with slightly different oring sizes...It is pretty annoying...

Agree, it’s annoying. The orings I bought (suggested by another on here) were a smidge on the large size thickness wise. They fit in the grove but were obviously not the right size either. While the canister sealed well, the cartridge inside was a little loose and didn’t make a perfect seal. I tried flipping the cartridge seals over as they had a decent indentation and that helped out enough to call it good but I’m not recommending that size oring for that reason. I’m thinking there are a couple different variants over the years.

I ended up buying the same rings and noticed the difference in sizes buy mine all sealed. I found I had to tighten it much less than I normally would otherwise the smaller/thinner rings would twist.

That’s what made me check a little deeper, when I noticed the same thing (that I had to barely tighten them down. The canister for sure sealed up well for me too. The issue I found when I delved into why I it didn’t need to tighten down as much was that the inner cartridge wasn’t fully seating. So, while there were no drips or seeps on the outside there was for sure some blow by on the inside. Again, I think there are several variations out there so everyone will probably have different experiences. As long as you still have 0 tds it’s fine.
