BRYOPSIS SCARE!

Hey all , been seeing these little green strands that branch out growing on the front glass . It sort of looks like bryopsis but I've read that bryopsis likes to start growing on liverock and spread from there. I at the moment have no green on the live rock but my front glass had some green things growing that sort of look like an upside down Christmas tree flowing with the water movement .the tank is young . 4-6 weeks old. And the light cycle was 12 hours! But I've been cutting it down closer to 8.

Hate to break it to ya but the glass was the first place mine started out at. It started popping up on frag plugs and finally the rock after that.

That's unfortunate . Wonder where it came from. Possible that is some sort of hair algae ?

It comes in on frags or live rock. Mine was a frag before I knew what it was.
I added 2 cowries as a last resort after trying everything. They worked

Kinda stinks. Cowries??! Don't wanna tear down at all.

Only thing it could've came on was live rock seeing as I don't have corals .

What species of cowries did you use? I'm in the process of treating my display with Kent Tech M Mg to try and eliminate my bryopsis. I'd like to know something that maybe can keep it in check later or clean up what doesn't die off. Thanks

Emerald crabs in large quantities eat bryopsis. Large quantities because it takes a lot of them to keep up with it. I actually have a Powerhead in my frag tank the crabs can't get to and it grows bryopsis day enough to keep them feed by manually pulling some of here and there for them. They take it right out of my forceps like candy.

I'm trying Vibrant out right now for bryopsis among other things (hair algae, dinos and bubble algae). People that have actually tried it and didn't immediately say "snake oil" have had some pretty big tank transformations, read up on it. Here's the videos that sold me:

That's the problem with bryopsis, nothing really reliably eats it almost everything would rather eat something else.

I dunno if I really want a whole herd of emerald crabs, I've never really trusted crabs much. They would be a nightmare to try and remove from tank if I decided to try to after they were introduced. I'm pretty positive it would be impossible for me in my display without a complete tear down. (There are many places I cannot physical reach)

I'm hoping the Kent Tech M takes care of it, I think it has it on the run at this point.

Bryopsis is nasty stuff.

Unless it's in the 3.5% listed here, I think it might be closer to carbon dosing.

the effects are the same as h202 even if h202 is the "other ingredients" :)

Hey yall,
I tried Kent Tech M-raised mag to 1900 for 3 months. Didnt do a lick of good-even with targeting the bryopsis when I added it.
I tried manual pulling, peroxide, moon snails, even cooking it to see if anything would eat it. NOTHING worked.
My LFS suggested chestnut cowries (although I suspect because they were new and expensive haha) but after a week I walked past the tank and I saw all the patches GONE!
I still see the cowries every so often nibbling on it. I have mayyyybe 2-3 single strands here or there that pop up but they manage it amazingly.
Anything is hit or miss but I tell anyone to try cowries. Theyre beneficial in their own rights too.

Its been 3 months since I stopped treating magnesium and Im STILL trying to get my parameters back to "normal".

*I originally tried to spot treat it on a frag of pink zippers with peroxide....it took all but 2 polyps out. I didnt like using chemicals so Im really happy it worked with snails.

I haven't seen my LFS carry cowries. Any of the stores locally actually. I wouldn't know where to get it

I beat my battle with bryopsis with boiling hot RO water and a turkey baster. I didn't do a lot at a time, but every couple days I'd boil a cup or two of water and go to work until the water was gone, repeat.

It's very very satisfying to watch all the color leave in an area about the size of a quarter. mwahahahahaha.
