What is the best way to control Bryopsis?

After reading a ton of different post I went with boosting Magnesium to 1600 for 7 to 10 days. That pretty much took care of the problem. Raise it slowly to avoid system shock and then let it come back down slowly too. There's a lot of different posts out there about this method, use a google search as not all of them are on this site.

Did you have to use Tech-M or did you use a different mag supplement?

I am about to start treating mine and I've read a ton on this and have found that Tech M is the only mag that works.

If Tech-M is the only mag supplement that works then i would have to believe that its not the mag doing the trick.

I have never batteled bryopsis so i was just making the statement based on the previous post. Maybe one of more seasoned reefers could chime in.

I was just agreeing with you it sounds suspicious if that is the only mag that works.

I've read in chemistry forum on RC that it is a impurity in the Tech M that kills the bryopsis, not the magnesium.
And that is what I've been doing on my tankl for the last week and a half.
Bryopsis is pretty much gone.
I'll start bring down the mag levels this weekend starting with a water change and carbon.

thats an aweful lot of ingredients for a "magnesium" supplement. jeesh! if i want to raise mag and not any of those other things, i guess i should find a different brand...wink wink

Already have the answer but just for confirmation, yes Tech-M was what I used and seems to be the product of choice for this purpose. Is it the magnesium itself or something else? I don't know but it cleared up my bryopsis problem and that's all I was worried about at the time.

I've since started using do it yourself tank additivies for alkalinity, calcium and magnesium but still have part of the Tech-M bottle for later use if needed.

i suspect it's the sulfate (mag sulfate). i used the BRS mag supplement (mag clor and mag sulf) and it worked for me.

not positive on this but that's my suspicion. can someone confirm that tech-m uses sulfate? i seem to recall it does

Well it does list sulphur as being one of the elements in it, so I would guess that is where it comes from. I had luck using the DT's Pure reef elements Mag to battle bryopsis. I believe it is a blend of mag chloride and mag sulphate as well.

Everything I have read says that it is only the Tech M that will kill the bryopsis.

It takes alot of it to get it up to the levels it's needed.
I've gone through 2-1/2 gallons of it in my 240 gallon tank with a 85 gallon sump.

Interesting, I might have to check the Chemistry forum out myself. Not looking forward to treating almost 400 gallons ... with Tech M prices!

i just gone doing this. I first tried it with Seachem and saw no reaction so i put a gallon of Tech M in and the problem went away in less than a week. My LFS also told me to remove my snails. At first, i didn't but noticed they were looking unhappy and transferred them to my QT. i moved them back and they look fine. this trick worked for my Bryopsis problem.
