Most biologist or experts in the field are not able to answer this question. They just don't know. They only have anecdotal answers at best. This would be true in my example. We started with one rose bubble tip in a 29 gallon bio cube. About a year later it split and we ended up with two. We always fed them silversides and thought it may be related to that. Not really the ideal food for them and they have been known to have issues with bones. So we stopped feeding them and only squirted mysis shrimp or smaller pellet food here and there. They got pretty large so we moved one to another 29 gallon bio cube. Well...the original again split. Maybe it is lonely, I don't know since we stopped direct feeding of silversides that wasn't the cause. No other harm in the tank or signs of duress. So I don't think it is that. Next chapter.

Managing two 29 gallon cubes was a bit much so I merged them into a 40 breeder. I guess three was a odd number and one of them, no idea which, split again and now up to 4. Over the next three years we saw a split here, there, and everywhere and ended up with about 8 to 9. Too many in a 40 breeder so we gave a few away and planned a upgrade. 210 gallons later we are now up to 11. There does not appear to be any end in sight and in my opinion based on what I'm seeing first hand, and a few accounts of other members on this forum, then are much like Xenia - can become a issue. I actually have Xenia also believe it or not.

Anyway my point is over the years starting with 1 I am now at 11. The go from long tentacle back to bubble tips to moving around, to a few looking bleached to a few looking so different that I could slap a fancy name on it and make a couple hundred bucks. I really don't know why they do it so in the end I just focus on what the tank needs and let them do their thing. The most humor I get from them is that I have this older pair of clowns that they host in. Sometimes in the morning I can see one in a BTA all the way across the tank from the normal one they live in or around. I giggle thinking that is the couch and they had a fight that night...so sad and lonely - but later in the day the pair are back together in the normal spot.

TL;DR - no one knows. Best of luck!

I was feeding the original bubble tip mysis shrimp once a week when I fed them to the fish...there are now 5! Thank you for your reply :)
