Bugout Stylo ???

Picking up this SPS this weekend.

Seller says its a bugout Stylo. Colors are right. Size was described as size of a dinner plate. I am newish to SPS and with my google searches have never seen a Stylo grow like this. I have had purple stylo in the past. Usually look like a branching tree or a fluffy bush, best description i can come up with before I have had my coffee.

This particular coral grew from a frag and is in a 40G breeder. Unfortunately I am not sure placement. Did it flatten out due to Flow? or maybe growing to close to the surface?

Light requirements? 200 par? are they able to take more with time?

I am going to have to frag it. Will split it between my two tanks. will start it near the sand and over the next maybe 2 months try to move it up to mid tank?

My tanks see 200 par at the sand bed, 540 mid tank and 790 1" below surface.

I don't know about that one, but my green stylo grows very similar to that. Kind of a "mounding" growth pattern.

I think once they hit a specific PAR they tend to plateau on the top. My Stylos and Birdsnest do similar.

It's strange that it's growing like this supposedly in response to strong lighting; in the wild, corals tend to become increasingly encrusting/laminar in deeper waters.


I also believe this might be a birdsnest or Pocillopora, the branchlets look too thin to be Stylo.

I am picking it up this weekend. I am going to have to frag it some unfortunately. Will throw the frags on a rack and see how they heal up

It does look similar to a Bird of Paradise...

Sorry, not a Bird of Paradise. It's a Hidden Forest which I believe is a Bird of Paradise hybrid similar to the Blue Zinger.

I am hoping transferring into my tank and fragging it down a bit will allow it to grow out in more of a traditional style.

Mine is almost 16" across side to side and about 13" front to back. It's maybe 8" from the surface.

I'm outside of Suffolk in a little town called Zuni. I'm about an hour west of VBeach

We are about 45 min west of Richmond.

So I picked this stylo up yesterday. I am confused by the structure of it. It’s very large and dense. Probably 2-3” thick and very solid. The husbandry of this particular piece was lacking.

I haven’t not seen its true colors yet but hoping to when I get home today. Had to move my torches around a bit to make room temporarily

I dipped it and have it in my 54g tank. After a couple days and I am sure it’s doing okay I think I am going to frag off a couple of the limbs and glue to their own frag plugs and see how they grow out.

It is to big to stay in here as a whole so I will eventually transfer the bulk of it to my big tank and see how it adjusts to higher nutrients

I have researching a bit more and going by what was already mentioned it looks like the flow was a huge contributor on how this coral grew.

It was in a small tank and didn't have much room to grow upward and what I would guess is very little flow across the top so it grew wide.

Once placed properly in a tank with flow and light do you think it will start growing up and branching like a more normal sytlo?
could this be a nice foundation for a large colony?

As of right now I sort of have the space and time to just let it grow. Tank is young and everything else is small.
