So I have a reefing friend who is not on the forums. He is dealing with well water which burns his mixed di resin up very quickly. Could he solve this problem by running a high strength cation resin in a stage before his mixed bed resins?

All well water is different, so your milage may vary without getting the well tested!

Many wells do produce significant amounts of CO2; I read that some users here employ a “degassing chamber” prior to their DI stages to minimize resin consumption!

Yes, he has considered that as well but was hoping to not have to install a third container when building his new mixing station. I told him I'd do some research. My thought is if he uses a larger than normal filter housing he could get more mileage and be able to recharge the resin when he swaps it out. I'm just spitballing here so....

The degassing chamber does not have to be that big. Mine is a piece of 4” PVC that flows into a 5 gallon container to be pumped through my DI container. Running cation-anion-mixed is a good way to run DI

Thanks for dropping in. I sent him am old thread to read where you were helping someone else with one. Seemed very interesting. Young guy purchased my old 75 gallon tank so I'm trying to help him out with this.

The thread I sent him was a doy degassing chamber thread someone was showing how they built theirs. Seemed to have a ton of info and insight into what was working and what wasn't.

If all depends on the water. I’m on a well. I just swapped my resin and made 300 gallons of finished water. Zero change in the resin. My buddy down the road can’t get 150 gallons without burning up his resin.

Sounds like he needs to degas. Which is a bummer. That gets messy.

I average 700 gallons thru my Anion stage prior to repacking

Is he using virgin resin? I have always used resin from BRS because it's a few dollars cheaper than other sources. I always felt like I burned through resin very fast. I recently found out that some vendors will sell recharged resin at a discounted price. This last time I bought a different vendor's brand that sells virgin resin and so far I'm getting at least 2 to 3 times the amount of 0 tds water than I'm used to! I'm pretty sure that my water is still a little high in CO2 but this resin has made a world of difference. I'm not on a well but the other thing that changed my DI consumption was installing a water softener.

Yeah that is low for two resin. On well myself, Does his house run an acid neutralizer. If so is he tapped in upstream or down stream. Definitely notice some improvement running post water filtration as oppose to before.
