Wow the real cool thing I see is that samoensis colony just blowing up on the right! Love thoes big fat branches! Can we get some pics of it?

Thanks. I always thought that this particular coral was A. digitifera, but having looked at its images on the internet, samoensis has started to make more sense to me now. Here are some pictures of it:

Wow, that’s impressive! How did you go about attaching that huge colony to rock?

Cheers for that.

If you look at my earlier post in this thread, you will see that the large colony on the left started as a tiny frag (about 2" long). The one on the right was about 3" X 2" (see the first photo above). All my coral colonies in my tank started as frags. it takes years of commitment to get them grow. It is hard work but is very rewarding when you look back.

Any tips or tricks?

With three words: High Energy Reef
  • Strong illumination with balanced spectrum (PAR is in excess of 400 mmol/m2/sec and provided by T5 lighting)
  • Very strong random low velocity water flow (water turnover of at least 100 times per hour in display tank)
  • High nutrient throughput (High fish population, which is well fed; nutrients are exported to maintain a balanced ratio between NO3 and PO4; presence of PO4 is crucial for good growth- typically between 0.046-0.096 mg/)
  • Elevated water temperature (27-28C)

I apologize in advance for the photo quality. The one on the left was taken with a filter on the camera to eliminate the blue light. For reference, the rock the two corals are attached to is about 8 inches tall.

Yea digitifera normally is more uniform in growth and clustering. The long side branches is what made me think samenoensis. But it’s hard to tell really because no many people grow these stunning species of acropora to any size so there are not many aquarium pics to refer to just ocean grown stuff.
I have to say that colony just made my day. These thick branches acros excite me so much! One reason I was glad indo opened but I haven’t seen many come in to the states yet. Time will tell.
