Lately I’ve noticed some of these more recent heads seem like they have some skeleton exposure, for lack of a better term. Is this something to worry about?
Seems like this happens more towards the side that gets more shade

Yes that's a bad thing.
I had some that looked like that and eventually concluded it was from too much flow. Once I moved them to a spot with less flow they expanded back out (some were too far gone and didn't recover though).
There are probably other reasons why this might happen, but this was just my experience.
