Hello everyone, this is my third attempt at trying to grow chaeto in my refugium. I get it from algae barn and as soon as I add it and the flow touched it, it starts to fall apart. This is also causing it to spread throughout my whole tank. Any help would be great. Thank you in advance!

obviously something is way off in your parameters. How old is your tank. what are your current complete numbers? Have you used any chemicals lately? MB7 or MB clean?

I put chaeto in a perforated floating container in my refugium section of my sump. You may need more chaeto than that to get it going. I started from a baseball size and now have to prune it every week. When I didn’t use the perforated container i had the same problem.

About three years since I moved it to its current location. I’ve had the set up for about 5 years. Nitrate it 25 last I checked. Haven’t checked the others in a bit. Would my parameters really make it do that the instant I put it in the refugium ? All corals and fish are doing good.

It's possible but hard to tell because you said you haven't checked your other parameters in a while. Your tank is aged enough to support a fuge and your set up appears close in size to mine. What light are you using? I use neptune gro with great success. Have you tried dosing chaeto gro?

No I haven’t dosed anything. Just added it today after getting it. Took the picture a few moments after. I have a kessel H80, plannned on only turning it on at night when main tank light is off. Should I run the light continuously for a bit? I don’t care it’s falling apart, but it’s getting into main display and that’s my biggest problem with it.

Do you have to flip that so often?

I run mine 12 hours overnight. It shouldn't be falling apart on you. Mine never does that. Maybe try the little fish fry net box to keep it in one place. Shouldn't have any direct flow just the normal return pump flow.

Mine has a valve that comes off the main pump. The tube leads to a PVC with lines cut along it into the refugium
