The ball of Chaeto in my fuge has turned into what appears to be a ball of hair algae. Is this normal?

Looks like chaetomorpha linum. Its a thinner variety. Grows well, but most people are familiar with Chaetomorpha crassa (thick strands). C. linum is more palatable for fish, but don't expect them to go crazy for it.
