Everyone was right!! Let it tumble is the way to go. It has doubled in size within a week under a 100w CFL bulb.

Thanks everyone!!!

It will eventually stop tumbling unless you remove a lot on a regular basis, that’s to much work for me. I just stir it up every so often and remove some monthly

Do you guys end up with a bunch of Chaetomorpha pieces in your main display?

I hope not. I put a foam block before it goes back into my sump. Then it would need to pass another foam block in my sump before returning to my DT. I did this work hopefully no Copepods can escape and I can keep them in my fuge.

+1 for the foam block

Once cheato start growing you won’t have a ton of small particles anyways

Newbie here. Honest question. I thought copepods were a good thing in the display and sump... Why do you want to keep them out of your display?

It's not that I want to keep them out but i want to keep a safe place for them to flourish. This way i can manually add them when needed.

You do want them in your display, but not the macro algae.

I think maybe they meant they want to keep the majority in the refugium... you wouldn’t want all your little critters sucked into the display at once, you want the majority to live and reproduce in the fuge with the “adventurous” ones being swept into your display a little at a time lol.

I keep a few chunks of live rock with my chaeto to give the pods places to live and reproduce. Some people prefer not, because it traps detritus. Some people make fancy, rope-light reactors to hold their chaeto. To each their own [emoji2372]

Without the container, is there a way to keep chaeto from flying everywhere?

What do you mean by "flying around"? Is it whipping around like a hurricane? If so, you might have to much flow and would need to turn it down. If its just random pieces breaking off then they could be pieces of dead Chaeto.

My Chaeto has grown in 2 weeks under this 100w CFL. See pictures. Top is the first day and bottom is tonight exactly 2 weeks later. LET IT SPIN!

Thats a lot. I am thinking about adding a 20G tank to put chaeto and pods in then overflow back to main sump

That is exactly what I did. I have it pumping up from my sump and siphoning back down. Works perfectly.

I changed the LED light to a 100 Watt CFL and it is doing a great job. The LED light was killing my eyes.

DISCLAIMER: NOT MY PHOTOS - This R2R reefer made a chaeto sandwich out of eggcrate. He flips it over on occasion, but it doesn't tumble and he stated that he didn't have any die off on the underside. To trim it, he just lifts out the sandwich and does some weed eating with scissors. I thought it was kinda neat and saved the pics. I should have saved the link to his thread also. ;Sour

Hopefully he will see his photos and give us an update.
