Not an expert on the subject, but we can find out the origin of the chalice, let say if you were to know whe wholesaler that brough in the chalice, but I don't think they will know what depth the chalice were collected. Only the divers might know.
Back to your question, I sometimes find that when fragging the wild chalices thick in size, the actual bone is very thin. the bottom part of the bone falls off as though thalice was growing over the live rock or the skelton of previous coral. Did you have this experience as well?
Its like skin, actual bone, deadbone/live rock.

+1 to above, most chalices are actually really thin if they do not have LR attatched, well vis versa, to them..which most do,but if you ever get 1 that isnt attatched they are about as thick as an average plate

I think that the thickness has nothing to do with the origin of the chalice. We can find plating versions in both Aussie and Indo...

I think thickness has literally nothing to do with placment in the tank, maybe wrong though.

I have been diving couple of different places in south pacific (Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga) The chalices i have seen have all been deeper then 30'. The ones with smooth skeleton structure tend to be in low current areas. The ones with large raised corallites where in high flow areas. Not sure if that helps some, but that's usually where they are in the wild that i have seen. Of course there are always a couple that dont follow that rule
