Chalice Vs. Chalice....

have you guys ever experienced chalices stinging each other... I'm getting ready to finalize the location of my chalices and I wanted to know if there's such incident? I find that some have longer sweepers at night than others...

-- long sweepers: OG ME, MH, PB, Golden chalice(s), BB Hybrid WM

-- no / short sweepers: RSC Rainbow, Tyree Red WM, BPC FT, RR

watcha think? should I be worried placing them too close together... right now, they are pretty scattered to prevent stinging...

You shouldn't have to worry about it on any of the ones you listed. They should be ok together.

I dont know which ones have longer sweepers, but I would give them plenty of room to grow out.

I wouldn't see an issue as long as there not crowded. I'm not sure if the chalice tentacles are stingers. I've never had an issue with close pieces. However, I did watch my orange fungia and miami hurricane battle today on my sand bed! Of course the fungia was winning till I spread them back out.:tongue: A little off topic but it could help a little.

This gives u an idea of how close mine were from each other. Never had a problem. I can see how an problem would occur if you mixed in a Robokaki or something similar. Otherwise you will be fine. Trust me. :)

I had my tyree red put out 3" stinger once and almost kill a colony I bought awhile ago :(
Browned out super bad....

The tyree pink watermellon has the longest sweepers I've seen. But that being said I've never had it hurt any other chalice within range. I do know if the actual corals touch you'll be cutting off dead skeleton.

I guess to be safe, I'll just give them a little room... I was planning on incorporating some on the rock work but that might be tricky coz I don't have too much LR real estate... hopefully, by March or April, I can get everything situated with my tank... :)

Yes, they can sting each other. The key is to try to keep the same species near each other. In my experience, it's not just the sweepers that can do damage. The mesenterie filaments can do major damage. That's the white stringy stuff they can spew out to a nearby coral and literally start to digest it, causing huge damage. I just had a quarter of my emerald Mummy eye "digested" by a nearby Aussie golden eye chalice. It also damaged my Original Pink Watermelon the same night. I broke my own rules, and paid the price.


It's already been said that you should keep Mycediums, Oxyporas, and Echinophyllias away from each other. But even Echinos can sting and kill each other. Try to keep the same kinds together. E.asperas tend to have thicker skeletons and larger coralites. I've kept many different color asperas right next to each other with no problems. One time I had two fresh cut frags of different color morphs put right next to each other, and a few months later, they fused. Justin Credible wanted it for his research.
Anyway, the watermelon echinos seem to be a different species, and I'm not sure which one. No coral books at home. I try to keep them all together.

The guys that you have to worry about sweepers are Echinopora. The original Tyree Blue Chalice and many more morphs now floating around. The sweepers are long and pack a nasty punch.


By the way, the offender that stung my Mummy eye is the brownish echino with golden eyes at 5 O'clock in the picture below.

Shortly after this picture was taken, I glued it to a disk much too small and it was overhanging the sides. That's usually where the trouble starts. A snail shifts it a little too close to another chalice on the sand bed. And if the other chalice was growing down the edge of the disk, bam!
If your lucky, there's just a winner and a loser. But sometimes they both lose.

My Aussie Snake skin Echino has been put in time out a few times for not playing nice with Watermelon type Echinos.

Species on species action is generally fine - just make sure you know they're the same species ;)

ah... never knew what that stringy stuff was... I've seen the RSC Rainbow spit out that stuff before... currently, the Hell's Kitchen is doing it... yikes!!! good thing they have some space...

I wouldn't say there's a rule of thumb, as the species, flow pattern and other factors will play a role, but just watch how far they extend at night and place a couple inches further than that ;)
