Listen to this and see if we can figure this out, so first off water parameters,

10 dkh
8.4 ph
440 cal
0-5 ppm nitrate
0 nitrite
0 phosphates or so low my api test wont pick it up
1350 mag
1.026 salinity

Ok so I have been reefkeeping for 15 years now and have never had this happen.
My LE chalices are getting burned or something, I will try to get pics but untill then I will try to explain. It all started one day when I was looking at my tank, I was noticing how nice my chalices were growing, well I left the house for about 2 hours came home and one of my chalices flesh looked black speckled and most of the skeleton was exposed with flesh kinda
floating of in little pieces. Now you can imagine I was horrified, the biggest thing that caught my attention was no other piece around it was touched. So has anyone had something like this happen? Also the piece lived and I have had it happen about 6-7 times now and they always recover but what the *(^*%!!! It will hit a chalice that has others around it with no sign of damage to the others. And to answer a question I'm sure alot are thinking, no the surrounding chalices are not stinging each other, at least not indirectly with there sweeper stingers. PLEASE HELP!!!!! I know I have not gave much info but it is har to describe yet believe.

Do you think it could be brown jelly disease? I am really reaching here because typically the coral doesn't recover from that. Do you always run your DKH that high? Would you say that is the high end of the daily swing?

Definately not brown jelly I know what that looks like. There is nothing jellyish or anything just blackish spots like acid has been poored on it. As for as my alk, I thought that is about normal. I was always under the assumption that 9-12 was the norm, but yeah I have always maintained 9-10. This is the weirdest thing I have had happen. Oh yeah here is a pic,

This is the after effect.

could you have had any ALK swings in the past few days?? IMO chalcies HATE ALK shifts!

I thought it coulda been the tds at first but since it started happening I have bought all new filters and checked it with multiple meters. As far as alk it has always been pretty steady 9-10.

Also this has been happening radomly for about 2 months now. I have multiple frags in the same spot and only one will do this.

How stable is you temp? Normally Alk swing will cause stress to the chalice and then it get bleached like. Start doing small water changes and try to keep you parameters as stable as possible and hopefully it will turn around for the better. Good luck.

Id say my temp does swing from about 75 to 79, As far as my parameters they have been steady at what is quoted above. Also I normally dose 2 part religously but since it started I have not been doing anything but weekly water changes.

mine have done that and i found the calcium to be low....i now dose 2 part, mag, as well as kalk.

I have two things. I had a tyree pink look like that lost half my colony i came home and half the colony was fine and the other half was pure skeleton with almost like a black mucus coming up from the skeleton half. I came to the conclusion is was sweepers from another piece. I had a theory it was so i put another piece close and what do you know another piece at night from over two inches away hit it. I was astonished it's sweepers where that long. I religiously look at my tank at night and feed, never have i seen them that long. Then lasty i had a piece look just like that about a two inch piece of fallen sun looked Exacly like the one above i never could figure what happen to this piece it receded then turned to a punch of pencil eraser size eyes but about 5 times as many eye's as i had before the issue it was VERY weird.

Also the picture from above is definitely not sweeper damage after closer inspection.

I have had the same thing going on. I believe mine is due to alk swings for lazy dosing practice but at the same time I have notice an increase in bacterial growth. I tested the po4 an it was at 0.06ppm using a hach calrimeter. Tissue loss has occured from the edge in i am going to check the silica level in the tank as it is the building block for Diatoms. If anyone would like to continue input for the both ofus it would be greatly appreciated.

I am very vigilent in my dosing but I went ahead and have treated with interceptor after having a conversation with a fellow R2R member about something similar that used to happen to his acans, I used a whole pill for my 150 so I definately nuked anything that might have been munching on them. I have done 2 large (100gl) changes since the interceptor and everything is looking really good so sar. I am hoping that whatever it was has passed, I guess I will find out within the next 2 weeks, I will keep you posted. Thanks for everyones help so far.
